Better than going ill equipped into an ill advised war.
Maybe the universe will welcome us as liberators.

Personally I’m fine if space exploration takes a back seat for a few years, things are kinda rough right now.
Drive By Truckers summed it up pretty well.

I’m not. We need to get into space! The myriad benefits of a long-range view far outweigh the short-term savings. Besides obvious things like mining the moon and manufacturing in orbit, we can learn a lot more about how environments work when we have to maintain one.
Also, if we don’t get there, I promise you the Chinese will. And if you worry about nuclear missiles, you should worry more about someone sitting at the top of our gravity well with the ability to throw rocks at us…

Meh, I don’t care who goes or gets there first. But I’m all for it!
It should be an international effort
How about making space ( and moon, Mars) a shared experience?
Dibs is so old-fashioned.

There is probably life out there — if not, to use an old joke, it is a tremendous waste of good space – so if there is life out there and they get here first it will mean that they are more technically advance then us, and if you look at human history you’ll see that when a technically advance culture meets up with a less advance culture – well just think how well it worked out for the Aztecs or the American Indians.
Then maybe they will be more benign then humans, after all the Star Trek crew was always trying to bring peace to the Universe.

^ Speaking of Star Trek. Are there any conservative Trekkies?
Star Trek is so liberal & often socialist in outlook that I often wonder.
motivemagus said, 28 days ago
Socialist? Dunno about that, but it is certainly liberal, depending on what you count in which series. The original was “cowboy diplomacy” in the days of the Vietnam War; The Next Generation was more about engagement than beating people up (though they managed a good bit of that, too); on Deep Space Nine the Ferengi was one of the best (and smartest) characters on the show, and he was the purest form of capitalist and surprisingly honest, while the religious people were often sneaky, underhanded nasty politicians, but the commander kicked @ss. We will not discuss any other shows…

Yeah, I think I’ve been more exposed to the latest batch of Trekkie shows than the originals but I can see how “cowboy diplomacy” matches some of the earlier shows with Shatner.
I’m also a little hazy with the latest ones but can just about follow your references ;-) I just thought the starfleet chaps didn’t get a salary and money had been abolished within the Federation and puzzled how the Ferengi with their strong capitalist ways dealt with the Federation…ok, I’m so obviously not a Trekkie :) I withdraw my observations until such a time I have absorbed a few hundred shows. At the very least.
Thanks for your reply though! (at this point imagine a fumbled but failed attempt at a Vulcan live long and prosper salute. :p )
