Isn’t that the way. You’re feeling good about yourself and your opportunities for the day and then you get something in your eye and your make-up runs down your face, or you spill coffee on your nice clothes, or you slip and fall in front of everyone, or someone hits your parked car, or a picture in a restaurant falls on your head as you dine — all of which have happened to me. lol. But then I tell myself things could be MUCH worse. Happy Weekend, Cathy Clan!

I know EXACTLY how you feel! Just this past Wednesday, I went to the dentist for a normal cleaning and to have a few yearly x-rays taken. The next thing you know, they tell me I’ve got 4 cavities needing to be filled right away (with 2 more coming — and soon), a new crown has to replace an old crown and a root canal job that I had done almost 24 years ago now has to be done yet AGAIN because that particular tooth’s root(?) has an infection that I didn’t know anything about because it hasn’t bothered me at all (who knew root canals didn’t last forever?!? I sure didn’t!). I held myself together until I got home then cried like a baby as I told my husband all about my horrible appointment. It was just completely overwhelming getting so much bad news all at once that I simply couldn’t hold in the stress and anxiety from it any longer. You think you’re doing a good job on your teeth, all the brushing and flossing you do every day and night, the every-9-month cleanings you get, because you’ve worn braces twice (once as a child and then again as an adult) and you don’t want to lose all your teeth and struggle with dentures like your mother, father and everyone else of their generation does . . . only to find out that your best efforts to hold on to them forever until you die apparently STILL sucks anyhow! So now I have to set up a consultation with an endodontist next week to get more information about this supposed infection I’ve got and what my next step has to be. I’m hoping things won’t be as dire as my dentist made it sound but that’s NEVER the way my luck runs. That root canal was scary and painful back then (not to mention expensive when you didn’t have dental insurance — which I still don’t) and it upsets me greatly at the thought of having to go through that misery all over again. But what can you do?!? Nothing. You just have to do it, suffer the pain — both in your mouth AND your wallet — and move on. But short of death, I don’t know how things could possibly be much worse for me right now though.

    Hi, rgcviper!

Hello and Happy Saturday to all my nutty “Cathy” friends. Hope everyone’s having a really good weekend so far!

you can dicker with the dentist on the price of a procedure. also, 24 years ago, they didn’t have all the technological marvels and pain meds they have now. also, the dentist who did your root canal 24 years ago, prob’ly has more experience by now.

    or he’s dead

Hi Cathyites!! Sorry about your miserable visit to the dentist Mom!! I hope it turns out to not be so dire when you talk to the endodontist. As for Cathy, bout time she learned she doesn’t have to have a man around to be happy.

All right—our first “AACK” in quite a while!

HI, MOM. So sorry to hear of all your dental trouble. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Hope you’re having a great weekend, Clan.

OUCH. Really sorry to hear that Mom. You have my sympathy for sure. Having had 2 root canals, 2 crowns, and an average of 2 cavities a year (and I floss and brush daily to the point that my dental hygienist complains that I don’t leave her anything to do but that doesn’t seem to help) I know what you have been through – and are facing. I’m sure you will have a much better experience with the root canal this time around – they are not all that bad now (of course it was in the middle of my first root canal that we discovered that my body burns off the anesthetic twice as fast as a normal person (I am not normal it seems) – that was not fun!) I was not aware of that ‘ability’ since I never get freezing for normal drill and fills (my dentist threatened to sell tickets when I had to have all my childhood fillings replaced – 12 surfaces in each of three 1.5 hour sessions). Anyhow, best of luck with your teeth!

PS: root canals and crowns are about $600 here – I know because my limited dental insurance does not cover either of those procedures. oh – and the 2nd root canal – never felt a thing since they doubled the dose of anesthetic!

Thanks for your kind words about my loss. This is a particularly tough time of year to lose him – we have done stage lighting and special effects together for 47 years – and the big annual show we did for 40 of those years opens in a week and a half. I will miss his help for sure – even though he could not go to the theatre for the past 6 years he still helped with ideas, planning, design, and some construction of the lighting effects. They are dedicating the show to his memory this year so I know I will be crying during parts of the show (and yes I still talk to him too).

Again, good luck with your teeth. Hopefully it will not be as bad nor as expensive as it seems!

I completely get how Cathy is feeling, that’s exactly how I feel right about this time of the year!

@GretchensMom I had a root canal done just last month. Don’t you worry, the procedure is all easily done now. You won’t feel a thing. All the best!
