Newlyweds Cathy and Irving navigate the treacherous waters of couple-hood. From pampered pets to prying parents, they’ve got a lot to learn! Wedding or not, it’s still all about Cathy - she personifies the young career woman and her typical daily obstacles. Ice cream, panic attacks, stress and love are all in a day’s work. We read, we identify, we laugh. Who could ask for more?
Cathy is the Everywoman. She deals with diets, self-esteem, in-laws, and letting her husband know that she is the boss. Everyone can identify with her shopping, bills, taxes, planning for the future and coping with her husband’s incessant computer golf games. Whether you are a newlywed, single, or have been married for decades, all will enjoy the daily predicaments of Cathy and Irving.

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, “A little dab’ll do ya!” I have a feeling Irving may be seeing rouge by the time that shopping spree is finished.

Where does she get the money from? Irving must have spent up after buying his new jeans.

Doncha get it, Helen? Cathy represents the Typical American Consumer who spends far more than she has and then ends up mired in debt. I believe the time will come when she and that husband of hers will have to declare bankruptcy or have their wages garnisheed (sp?)
BTW, what she REALLY needs is some medicated lotion for those spots on her face in Panel 3.

Red lipstick? It’s only fitting since after this latest shopping spree their budget will be in the red, if it isn’t already.

Everyone’s in the red these days with the recession..except for comic charecters who can have all the money in the world.
Oh, and Susan..? Those ‘spots’ are actually lines to indicate the shiney and newness of the color on her lips, fyi.

I think that the spots look like “old lady whiskers” starting up. Cathy is getting up there in age.
When is Guisewite going to have Cathy discover gray hairs, freak out and then dye her hair several colors at a time till she gets it right? A story line worthy of at least two weeks worth of strips…maybe three.

I just read today’s strip and then noticed the tag beside these comments: “Cathy is the Everywoman.” “This strip stops being funny if you imagine every woman being as shallow, empty, and neurotic as Cathy is. Is it true that “[e]veryone can identify with her shopping”?

Cathy is all those little hang ups that everyone thinks about a little and some think about a lot. We’ve all had those moments were getting something simple and pretty makes us feel better. Only some of us max out our credit cards trying to buy joy.

I hate shopping, but I go to the mall to walk with friends.
We get good laughs from what the stores are selling!!
Give me a good ball game anyday. When my husband found out I LIKED sports, he was thrilled!!

Lots of Cathy in me – not quite to the exaggerated heights of a comic strip character tho. It’s fun to laugh at ourselves.
