Newlyweds Cathy and Irving navigate the treacherous waters of couple-hood. From pampered pets to prying parents, they’ve got a lot to learn! Wedding or not, it’s still all about Cathy - she personifies the young career woman and her typical daily obstacles. Ice cream, panic attacks, stress and love are all in a day’s work. We read, we identify, we laugh. Who could ask for more?
Cathy is the Everywoman. She deals with diets, self-esteem, in-laws, and letting her husband know that she is the boss. Everyone can identify with her shopping, bills, taxes, planning for the future and coping with her husband’s incessant computer golf games. Whether you are a newlywed, single, or have been married for decades, all will enjoy the daily predicaments of Cathy and Irving.

I was fine with this series until now. They are dogs for pete’s sake! These people are seriously demented.

I was afraid when Cathy and Irving got married this strip was jumping the shark.
Not much changed, which was good and bad.
It was still all about the same old recycled themes with a marital spin.
This is finally something truly new and different in Cathy.
And most of us hate it.
Was that a shark back there a few weeks?

Oh good grief, this is too ridiculous for words. Yeah it probably did jump the shark when they got married. I liked it better back in the days when Cathy had dates and worried about her apartment being a mess and not having any clean clothes to wear, and actually showed her at her job now and then. I miss Charlene and Mr. Pinkley. I even miss her mom and dad! We never see them anymore.

My mother in law cares more about her 4 - yes I said FOUR - dogs than she does about her family… sometimes life IS stranger than fiction!

So I guess us married people that are infertile and only have dogs… are seriously demented, we should just jump in a hole and die..
thank for the thought lightenup.. I appreciate it and now know how the rest of the world feels about me..

I miss Charlene the most. She was supposed to have a baby coming a couple of years ago, and they never finished with that story line. Inquiring minds want to know, Guisewite! What a great opportunity you missed for some interaction between Charlene, who was obsessing over being pregnant, and Cathy.
And how about Andrea? I would like to see that friendship revived. So here’s two old/new story lines we need to spice things up a bit and get away from the same-old-same-old, Guisewite.

About the pet worship…..
Yes, I have seen this happen plenty of times. But only because pets can’t talk back. As soon as they learn to talk, it’s all over for them. So, the continued silence. Smart animals.
This strip may be exaggerated a bit, but that’s what makes it so funny. You have to get your point across in just four little boxes. The people who write these comics are genius’s in my book.

It would be nice if everyone would lighten up. I would swear a month ago people were complaining that they were tired of reading the same old Cathy jokes. But now that Guisewite has changed the plot a bit (at the request of many of you), lots of people are still complaining. It’s a comic, it is supposed to bring laughter and fun, and many of us still like to read it and can identify with it. If you don’t like it, why are you reading it?

I have an aunt and uncle (dad’s brother) who were married for years before they had children. We joked that this would be my grandparents with their dogs. I now have cousins that are the same age as my children!

calm down mrs_lolowar its not a personal vendetta against you, just a comment on the strip and idea in general

I think today’s comic is cute. I have 2 kitties who are spoiled (although not to that extent, of course). I also like that Irving’s parents are willing to spoil their “step-dog” (Cathy’s dog Electra).
And I think it was about time Cathy got married. It would be nice to see the people at her office, too, but it’s fun to watch her and Irving settle in.
I’ve heard people complain that this comic doesn’t change much, but how many of them do? Sometimes it’s like spending time with old friends - I may have a pretty good idea what they’re going to say and do, but I like being around them.
