So if you’re a murderer, sorry, killer, you’re OK. If you’re the victim you’re screwed every which way. Who came up with this law? I’m curious.

    @Fiendly Neighbourhood Terrorist

According to the NY Times, in 2005 when the law was passed in Florida, Mr. LaPierre of the N.R.A. said his group would introduce the bill in every state, and he predicted it would win broad national support.

“We will start with red and move to blue,” he said of the states. “In terms of passing it, it is downhill rather than uphill because of all the public support.”
He is wrong about public support; it’s only a motivated minority that wants it.

    Oh, we see now:
“If Zimmerman were African American, would Bell have wasted any ink on Trayvon’s death?” wasn’t supposed to be a rhetorical question.
Why don’t you write to Bell and ask?

No law allows you to get out of a car follow a person get in a fight and shoot them….The jerk was not defending his ground, he wasn’t defending anything. He was the one who went after the kid. It’s the entire police force that should go to jail…they are as crooked as a dogs hind leg. Chasing somebody down and shooting them isn’t at least assault? Crooked cops….

If you are pursued and feel threatened and throw a punch to defend yourself, you are now the aggressor and can be shot dead. If, however, you feel threatened and shoot the other guy dead, that’s ok. Except if Trayvon had done that, being black and in a hoodie, he probably would have found himself in jail before he could say “self defense”.

Those who advocate the free right to carry firearms have been assuring us for years that an armed populace would reduce crime. Now we see how it works. Justifiable homicides have tripled in Florida since the passage of this law. Under previous laws Zimmerman would probably have been a criminal charged with (at least) manslaughter but, under the new law, he is not the only one to have become a non-criminal. Martin is not the only one whose death is no longer a crime.

I like today’s strip (and I’m as surprised as anyone by that). But let’s not forget that the reason there was “no evidence to the contrary” that Zimmerman acted in self-defense is that he had a broken nose and a head wound (according to the police and paramedics reports, AND the enhanced videotapes of Zimmerman that were previously reported as showing him injury-free). Of course, that doesn’t make Trayvon wrong and Zimmerman right (I think Bell argues a good case here that it would be frightening for Trayvon to be stalked by a stranger).

Yes Trayvon, you CAN stand your ground. You can also call the cops or if you happen to be on the phone already, ask the other person to do so.
What you CAN’T do is decide to beat someone up just because you think they’re being obnoxious and creepy; because all THAT does is give them a reason to stand THEIR ground.
All of which is information that is unfortunately a little late for YOU, but cheer up…
Unlike MOST young black males who get shot, YOU had the good fortunate to be shot by a “White Hispanic”, whatever the heII THAT is, so Race Bait Incorporated and a bunch of congress-critters are actually interested in speaking up for you on their own behalf. Which I suppose is a “glass half full” thing.

    Signed, Zimmermans Mother.

I haven’t seen anyone yet report the height and weight of shooter and shootee. It would have bearing on who was most threatening to who.

But in any case it seems that shooting an unarmed person is disproportionate, even in self-defense.

Actually, several articles have mentioned that Zimmerman outweighed Martin by something on the order of 100lb. Others have implied that Martin was taller but I haven’t seen any hard numbers on that.
I have heard some comment that Martin was big and ugly and that Zimmerman was therefore justified in his fear but I think that argument actually works against Zimmerman. I doubt that Martin suddenly changed appearance in the course of a few minutes. If Martin was visibly threatening that might imply that Zimmerman’s confidence was bolstered by the knowledge that he was armed and that, in turn, might be used as an argument for premeditation.
