But what are the demographics of comic readers? Are they really mostly young people and are they really the target of newspapers like of much of TV?

But that is not terribly relevant in the long run because it will all hinge on what the formerly newspaper-reading public chooses to do with its time.

For example, Philadelphia (my home town) once had TWO great dailies, the morning Inquirer and the evening Bulletin. But as the 6 p.m. news began to supply most people’s evening news needs, the Bulletin withered and died. If it happens to the Inquirer as well, it will just mean I’ll have two dead newspapers to feel nostalgic for. Life will go on.

Newspaper editors have a real problem as pertains to the comics page and attracting young readers.
A good edgy strip that young readers will enjoy, may offend older readers.
The average age of newspaper readers is over 50. This age group is more likely to complain if a comic offends them.
The safe, inoffensive comics that are acceptable to older readers bore the young ones.
The editors dilemma: Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

I always read (past tense) the funnies first. Our local paper is a weekly and has nor funnies, either. So I get mine online. Go figure.

Another aggravation: editors who feel that they have to change the proportions after reducing the comics to magnifying glass size. Charlie Brown does NOT have an oval head, dammit!
