Why doesn’t the government just quit issuing marriage licenses? If every couple got a civil union (gay, lesbian, or straight) it would solve the problem. It’s just a legal contract between two people as far as the state is concerned. Marriage would then become a church issue. The Mormons, Catholics, Evangelicals and such could ban gay marriage and any church willing to perform them could do so.

doc,You know your logic is too logical, don’t you? You’re messing with minds here. Be careful.

    Another splendid idea from doctortoon.
However, it makes too much sense to ever be put into practice.

The Catholic Church did not require a ceremony, priest or witnesses to recognize a marriage until they formalized the procedure at the Council of Trent in 1545. Prior to this, registration of marriages with the church was optional (the state was not involved). In Protestant countries, the state was the only (optional)registrar for marriages until the mid-18th century.

Same-sex marriage was recognized in the Roman Empire until 342, when it was banned by Christian emperors.

So the whole thing about there being any “age-old sanctity of marriage” is a canard; there was no religious involvement until just over four and a half centuries ago, less than a quarter of the history of Christianity.

Of course, opponents of gay marriage won’t let a little thing like facts get in the way.

Thanks Runar. A letter to the local paper alluded to what you said here, but it was a little slim on facts. Glad to have the details. I’m straight, but a number of the young people I counsel are gay or bi, so this has been a big issue lately in my discussion groups.
