    It took Batman awhile, also:
    “I’m Bru… Batman.”

Some of the shorter superheroes need to use stools.

Notice that Calvin’s phone still has a dial on it.

These days kids have it even harder – your name/number displays when you’re calling.

    Personally I was Steve Austin.

(Never got the action figure though – sigh…)

We had a crank phone- had to crank it once to get the operator. We gave her the name of the person we were calling and she connected us. We were on a party line and heard all the rings and could call someone just by cranking their number- 3 longs and a short or what ever their ring was. I was in Jr Hi when the dial system was installed.

My dad worked for the phone company from 1950 on. I remember the phones he worked with, and especially the party line. Where in KS are you located? I ask because I live on the KS-MO line, literally on State Line Rd. I tell people I have my topsoil flown in from Kansas every day.

If you’re a superhero, it helps if you live in a town where all of the people are stupid.

Why do you think Clark Kent worked for a newspaper?

The old style phones. Calvin’s Dad in an unspecified office job in the big city. All these things may date the strip- but it doesn’t matter; it still works better than a lot of current strips trying to make the humor ‘about’ new technology. Watterson was simply using the props that were needed, traditional and recognizable.

@ leftwingpatriot: “I’m Bru… Batman.” Or, more simply, “Bruteman.”
