Not when the child’s laughter sounds diabolical and evil…

I think Calvin has a much closer relationship with his father than his mother.

Like most moms, she has to be the bad guy while dad is working and she seems to know him a lot better. My “Calvin” seems to be a lot closer to his dad than he is to me also – he behaves for his dad so dad doesn’t have to be the disciplinarian like I do.

Could be your “Calvin” knows he can’t get away with anything with his dad so he doesn’t even try.

I had a girlfriend once whose kids wouldn’t obey her. The reason was her “no” didn’t mean “no”. They tried it with me once, found out my “no” really meant ’no" and I never had another problem.

She never did learn or understand why they would obey me but not her.

I have two students, both mothers of little boys. Mom 1 yells constantly, and her three boys drive her to distraction on a regular basis. She tells me “You don’t understand because you don’t have kids…they just refuse to mind.” Mom 2 never raises her voice, speaks to her toddlers like they are reasonable human beings, and gets instant obedience. Why? Because Mom 1’s boys know she doesn’t do anything to back up the yelling…and they enjoy jerking her chain. Mom 2’s boys know she means what she says—and no, she doesn’t smack them, she doesn’t have to. It’s all done with the voice. She expects respect and response, and she gets it, because she treats them the same way.

My former sister in law would let her children run wild and never said a thing, unless she was in a bad mood and then she screamed at them for everything

My former father in law would always defend the kids whenever they did anything wrong with the phrase “They’re just babies, they don’t understand” until somewhere around 8 or 9 when he would be the one yelling at them “You should know better!”

I don’t hear much from my ex and her family these days but what I do hear is that the kids have grown up pretty much like I expected – trouble

Consistency in parenting is a good thing
