Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

If you make it in sterling silver, someone will buy it.
Not kidding…in a local jeweler’s shop I was amazed to find, in among the silver pheasants and deer and gundogs, a solid silver Tyrannosaurus and a Triceratops. Each about 8 inches high. Also a natural-size solid silver fiddler crab.
Go figure.

I think this whole arc was one of Bill Watterson’s numerous digs at the syndicates who were constantly pressuring him to license and merchandise Calvin and Hobbes — which Bill flatly refused to do, as he saw merchandising his characters as a betrayal of the art form: in other words, he saw it as selling out. It’s one of the main reasons that he finally ended the strip.

Which didn’t stop a lot of people from bootlegging anyway. When your creation has mass appeal, you might as well let yourself be assimilated… resistance is futile, after all..

The collectable and art value would be impressive, but so would be the sheer amount of valuable metal. In Jerusalem you can get sculptures of various sizes in sterling silver – I’m thinking of the two spies who carried an enormous bunch of grapes on a pole. (Plato also mentioned the grapes of Canaan, saying they were the size of plums.)
Pewter sculptures of this sort sell quite well, too.

I mean everything pewter from the fictional Starship Enterprise to anything else desired. Haven’t seen pewter dinos yet, but they have to be somewhere…
