Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

Sadly, opening a savings account is really all you can do with that anymore.

I remember adverts from my childhood where parents gifted their kids savings certificates for their “happy future” and the kid grinned moronically. The people who invented those ad campaigns never were children, I assume.

Have you tried opening a savings account with five bucks lately? You’ll break up the bank.

Calvin in College? I would have pictured Calvin in the first grade until he’s 40.

Sadly, I don’t think you can even do that anymore. Now the big banks, (Chase, Wells Fargo, etc) CHARGE you $5 per month if you don’t have a minimum balance in your savings account. Even if you could, why bother for only less than a 1% interest rate.

and if you DO earn any interest – even a measly 1%, the IRAss
will tax it. Again – having taxed it when you earned and deposited it. Catch 22

the local college here was $235 for 18 credits in 1987. Today it’s over $4000. I doubt very much that the education is 18 or 20 times better than it was…

I know this. It’s why I don’t have my money in a bank that charges me to keep my money “safe”. It wasn’t all that long ago that CD’s paid somewhere near 10-15%; that’s history. Now you’re seeing a 1% max when you can find it; mortgages are lower than they’ve been in a long time. the new bread-and-butter for the big guys is credit cards. Checked out those APY’s lately, and what happens to them if your payment arrives a day late? Legal usury.
