Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

That bike in the last panel is defying the law of gravity – just like their TV set.

Another opportunity to expound on my firm belief that bicycles should be classified as foot-powered conveyances, not as motor vehicles, because they’re not; and they should be classified as pedestrians. No vehicle with less than 5 brake horsepower is allowed on the Interstates, and bicycles shouldn’t be allowed on the streets. They’re a danger to themselves and to motorists. Motorists kill each other enuugh without adding bicycles to the mix.

It’s called a no-floor-line experiment. Stephan Pastis does it occasionally.

I use a helmet when biking, but I draw the line at spandex shorts.

The very term ‘fanny pack’ is funny if you’re British (over here, a dad does not have a fanny!)

You’re right; there should be bike paths everywhere. Where I live they don’t have paths everywhere, but lots of them and there is always a reasonable way to get “from here to there” on a bicycle. Sadly, I can’t wear spandex without drawing chuckles anymore either. You can buy pants that have the functional parts hidden inside but it really isn’t necessary for the kind of riding I do now. I do wish someone would make a good quality (yet affordable) helmet, that didn’t look either like an extreme-sport wannabe or just silly.

Where I live we have plenty of bike paths. And cyclists still ride on the sidewalk. I’m talking adults, on “racing bikes,” not kids. Half of them don’t even have a bell. Caveat pedestrian!

Surely Americans can figure this out – others do. Bikes are fantastic means of conveyance – they are good for your health, good for the environment and are much quieter than cars.

Cycling is an excuse for being a dweeb.
