Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

My ancient dad tried this with me, but it didn’t work. The other members of my family agreed with me.

You’re getting hot and bothered, Calvin!

Coldness is building up the character!
Gweed O'Murray said, about 1 month ago
You’re warm for about 10 minutes after a stunt like that, then it’s just the same old cold.

Oh, the victim mentality on display.

Was on school camp once and kids wouldn’t settle. So I stood them in the lake. 10 minutes later they promised they would stay in their beds. That was 25 years ago. Couldn’t do it today of course. Ahh, the good ol’ days.

In the hot summer sometimes my husband takes a hot shower. He says when he gets out it feels cooler. But that feeling doesn’t last long.

Hey, anyone seen this :
Bill Watterson granted a rare interview to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, his hometown newspaper, today.
In the picture, he looks like a spittin’ image of Calvin’s Dad !

Nice to see an interview. Thank you for the link. Anool

I did that when my son was little and was having a temper tantrum. I told him to go outside for a few minutes and cool off. It worked. After that all I had to do was threaten him with the same treatment and he’d calm down.

Another thanks from me for the link, Anool. The photo was an old one, though, I think. Bill’s similarity to Calvin’s dad has been noted earlier.

Man is pleasure driven….Calvin will get pleasure from going back inside to the warmth. Once back inside he will want more…additional warmth, food, ….etc. It doesn’t end.

Ok, I’ll get in line and thank Anool too, it was great reading. I guess I’ll have to go stand in the ‘dummy’s’ corner…I’ve seen pictures of Watterson before but never noticed the similarity. The only difference is Calvin’s dad is clean shaven, no moustache.
I read another interview from Watterson, years ago, where he said he clashed with his editor and I’m guessing he just plain burned out. He did everything himself, he never hired a staff to help with the strip so after putting in all those hours and then having to butt heads with the editor pushed him over the edge and he walked out.
On top of all that there were the offers for him to do TV specials and market C and H merchandise which he refused. He’s a quiet man who didn’t like the limelight. Our loss.

We have a mini Hobbes (her name is “Kitty”) and when she doesn’t like the weather outside, she complains to us with plaintive meows - she wants us to fix it. P.S. She is always welcome inside - she just prefers to be outdoors.
jbmetalmonster said, about 1 month ago
LX013,
its kinda convenient how every time calvin builds character, dad saves a couple hundred dollars
Ray C said, about 1 month ago
Florchi, our cats are the same way. They hold us responsible for the weather. But it’s fun when they snuggle up at night.
Have you read Heinlein’s The Door Into Summer? He seemed to know cats very well.

To Anool; Thanks for the heads up. While it wasn’t a long article it gave a lot of insight into Mr. Watterson’s thought process.
As far as the appeal of Calvin and Hobbes, I think it has a lot to do with the fact that, while Calvin is a handfull, he’s not a stupid kid. He’s the smart kid with the vivid imagination that we all wanted to be when were growing up. I would even venture to say that the IQ of the average Calvin and Hobbes-ophile is anywhere from 10-15 points higher than that of the average comic strip reader because we understand Calvin and like that kind of kid. So let’s all admit that we are Calvin and Hobbes snobs. Hey, maybe that can be a club, sorta like G.R.O.S.S.

Also thanks for the link, Anool.
Um, maybe someone else said this and I just scanned the comments too quickly, but did anyone mention that Calvin could just put on a sweater? When our kids get cold, we tell them to put on more. It’s my wife who grumbles the most.

I’d say that Calvin’s warming up pretty good now. He’s getting a little steamed.
jrbj said, about 1 month ago
Well, now we have the proof that Dad is a child abuser. CPS will be very interested in this revelation.
Avolunteer said, about 1 month ago
why is this abuse? I think people are getting a little too coddling with children right now, a little eating dirt and being cold doesn’t hurt any but the ones who have health issues, and Calvin does not have those!

I think hypothermia will set in sooner than in five minutes.
I just hope someone sees Calvin standing ouside in the snow without a coat and notifies children’s services.
Hurst5809 said, about 1 month ago
Hey Calvin, put on a sweater and long pants!!! This kid’s not real smart.
Richard said, about 1 month ago
That is a problem today, media hype has made the dad look like either a tyrant or a total boob, causing the family unit to fall apart………so they side with the brat.

lovecomicsforever said, about 1 month ago
My dad sent me this because I get cold easily. Very funny, ha-ha. ;)
sharden2 said, about 1 month ago
We seem to be forgetting, if Calvin took a common sense approach to everything, well then, we wouldn’t have a strip.
Stede_Bonnet said, about 1 month ago
My dad’s definitiion was:
If the child dies, it’s “abuse”.
If the child lives, it’s “parenting”.
Thx Dad.

i don’t see how a “few minutes” outside could be cause for a nosy neighbor to call cps – besides that it will have little effect on calvin’s penchant to complain and a big effect on dad’s poll numbers.
