Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

Yeah Hobbes, but you’re not allowed to read the comic books when Calvin’s not there. You know the rules.

Isn’t he a bit young to be drinking tea?

He also gets to star in a comic book. I guess he’ll never know how lucky he is…

Herb tea would work, especially Celestial Seasonings’ Cinammon Apple. I think Mom knows better than to deliberately give Calvin anything caffeinated.

Mom always brought me weak, milky tea and buttered toast whenI was sick, but not when i was sick to my stomach.
Then she brought me warm, flat Coke.

Mom’s not the only one who isn’t happy Calvin’s home. But as soon as he starts itchin’ to get out of that bed, the party will be over.
jrbj said, 3 months ago
I only got warm milk toast. If that isn’t incentive enough to get up and go back to school I don’t know what is.
Puddleglum2 said, 3 months ago
Chamomile tea (as has been mentioned, among others) might have been the tea Calvin drank. It is anti-spasmodic which might have helped Calvin not to vomit, and it’s soporific which could have helped him to sleep. It worked for Peter Rabbit. Calvin had better not drink too much of it, though. He might fall asleep and miss reading his comic books all day.

My mom brought tea and toast when I was sick. Other times she brought warm ginger ale. We were allowed to drink tea as kids but not coffee.

I gave my son nearly 4,000 comics books when he finally got a stable place.
Now when I’m sick I guess I have to settle for reading comics online.

This is how it was for me when I was home sick from school in my youth. Of course, I didn’t have a Hobbes.

“…LIKE SOME PEOPLE I KNOW.”
Hobbes is not some people. Calvin must be taking significant poetic license here.

openminded - It was strange to part with the comic books, I collected from ‘75 to ‘92.
What made me so happy was that he wanted them, glad to see the passion for comics passed on to the next generation.

“Person”: Not too poetic. In philosophy it means “a self-conscious or rational being” To be a person doesn’t mean to be a human, it just means to be treated as sentient.
Awesome-o said, 3 months ago
Hobbes just doesn’t get it…
Puddleglum2 said, 3 months ago
I wasn’t using ‘poetic license’ in the context of poetry or rhyme. I was using it in the broad sense of taking liberty, relating to the terminology Calvin was using. I wasn’t speaking philosophically, either.
In the two dictionaries I consulted, a person is a human being. Calvin seems to consider Hobbes to be a tiger/human, but that is also taking liberties. Calvin also used the word people, which is plural.
In law a person is a human or an organization with legal rights and duties.
In theology, a person is any of the three separate individualities of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Thank you for reading my post and for your response.

Stop ruining these comic strips, there’s always the expert that HAS to ruin the strip. Hobbes a human or a tiger…WHO CARES, the strip is funny, enjoy.
Puddleglum2 said, 3 months ago
Everyone has a right to enjoy or appreciate the comic in his/her own way. Some others and I like to apply aspects of the comic to real life situations and circumstances.

The doctor perscribed tea, bouillan cube broth which Mom poured a little over white bread cut in squares, milk crackers, and jello when I had flu like symptoms as a kid. Without the bread and crackers it would be the clear liquid diet they serve in the hospital for a few days after surgery. I don’t know if they had herbal teas back in the 60’s when I was a kid. I think you’d have to grow and make it yourself right in the windowbox next to the other medicinal herbs of the day.

Mom should kiss Hobbes’ (Hobbese´s? I don’t wanna get the grammar police after me!) feet (paws, claws?) for taking Calvin for awhile and returning her ‘lone time.
