    Calvin, two thoughts ….

    “Every litter bit hurts.”

“Don’t be a litter bug, be a big one.”

  10. Johanan Rakkav

Johanan RakkavGenius_badge said, 14 days ago

Well, they’ve got the IRON anyway, Mars is covered with iron oxide…I wonder if it’s enough to make the planet commercially viable to an advanced spacefaring civilization?

Calvin, you might want to get your grubstakes in early here!

  18. jrbj

Kalulu, take out the “may be” and insert “is”. We’ll either simply pollute our planet into extinction or, worse, decide we can manage it better than nature can. Same result either way.

No map, no food, but ecological care. Not bad for a tiger who appears to be stuffed to grown ups. I’m lucky I NEVER grew up…

Think how much nicer things would be today if the first settlers in N. America had Hobbes to remind them of their responsibilities. Do you think America would still be populated by the bunch of lazy, inconsiderate louts that we have today? Yeah, I know… probably wouldn’t have made a difference. Those early settlers would have just stuck Hobbes in a Zoo and then buried it under a pile of discarded beer cans and consumer electronics.

one of the things i loved about this strip – and there are many – was its environmental message back in the day when it wasn’t exactly fashionable to raise the issue.

    Here’s your options, boys….

    1) Become the very first litterbugs on a totally barren planet
    2) Start the planet’s very first dumpground right there on the spot
    3) Recycle your trash by ingesting it and then fertilizing the dust
    4) Go home and clean your room

    ——————————–

hmm… interesting label you’ve thrown down there. Let’s review: I see several posts supporting ecology, anti-litter, and personal responsiblity. And your interpretation is that these people “hate” America?

I suspect that perhaps they LOVE it more than you do. High self-expectation is not hate. Only the “lazy louts” could possibly view it that way.

So, is Calvin eating a Mars Bar?

  35. Susan001

    Susan001 said, 14 days ago

No, it isn’t city people who pollute. It’s STUPID and GREEDY people who pollute!
And, Calvin, running away will not solve the problem of pollution.

As for his parents, Helen, they’re probably glad he’s gone.
Of course, this whole story line is in Calvin’s imagination, which his parents ignore.

Susan, add the word LAZY to your assessment and I’ll agree wholeheartedly.

  38. Ray C

Ray CGenius_badge said, 14 days ago

This is more complex than I at first thought. (Most things are.)
Mars, as far as we know, is a totally barren wasteland, completely lifeless.
There is no doubt some natural beauty there due to volcanic action, but for the most part it’s not much to look at.
A Mars Bar candy wrapper would be the only piece of art on the entire planet.
Seems a shame to crumple it up and stuff it in your pocket. It should be enshrined, like the Mona Lisa.
    Expecting to hear vehement rebuttals…

WHY ISN’T THIS COMIC IN COLOR? DON’T THEY HAVE THE MONEY TO DO IT?

  41. mfcoace

    mfcoaceGenius_badge said, 14 days ago

More likely they don’t have permission from the artist to color it. Watterson was/is very protective of his creation, and did not participate in the licensing of C&H products like other cartoonists, most notably Garfield’s Jim Davis. Essentially all C&H images you see outside of the books and forums like this are pirated.

Watson’s B/W work is out of this world - coloring it in for Sunday, while fun, took away our ability to imagine - for ex - how many hues of red C&H would be surrounded by without being limited by Pantone..
