It’s not what you bring, but what you forget to bring, that makes the trip. :)

Food, the map, the camera: Calvin, you need a better pre-flight check list.
LX013 said, 17 days ago
Turn around? Hope Calvin will not get lost!

Enjoy the trip on Mars!
Im looking up to you two!

Yeah, the driver never wants to turn around.

Now…Calvin’s face in the last panel says it all.. not bringing the camera was the biggest disappointment!! not the food, not the map!! quite surprisingly!!

What about the breathing masks?

You’re right, this wasn’t a very well planned trip, but this will give us lots of pleasurable moments, since Calvin’s imagination is so great…

It would appear they also forgot space suits to protect them from the hostile Martian environment and space helmets that would allow them to breathe Oxygen. Now food and cameras seem soooo …. secondary.

I thought it was cold there. Oh yeah, Calvin’s imagination.

Without the camera, who’s gonna believe you?

If you bring a camera, Bill Watterson will lose his job!

I wondered about the breathing aparatus too, the space suits, all of that. How are you able to breathe Calvin?

It’s a comic AND it’s Calvin’s imagination! c’mon folks, why so literal all of a sudden? If they can fly to Mars in a Radio Flyer they can certainly chill without O2 once they get there.
Susan001 said, 17 days ago
Oh, lighten up, midiranger! Part of the fun of reading this comic is thinking up witty posts in reply.
After Calvin & Hobbes are captured by Martian forces, the news will probably be broadcast all over the universe, so they needn’t worry about forgetting a camera.

Wonder why they didn’t stop at a Walmart and pick up a camera on the way… I mean there’s one every where you look here on earth I am sure they have them at all the exits on the way to Mars…
bald 716 said, 17 days ago
maybe they can find a walmart, and get food and a camera, there are walmart stores everywhere

I love the little suitcase next to Hobbes.

In the last frame they sound like an old bickering married couple.

I’m kinda surprised they decided to take the radio flyer. I expected to see them taking spaceman spiff’s spaceship.

I don’t think Hobbes figures in Spaceman Spiff. That’s more for dealing with human authority figures, not felines.
grazer said, 17 days ago
Nice landing all things considered.
Too bad about the camera.
Picture postcards will have to do.

Aw, come off it. Spaceman Spiff – that’s only Calvin’s imagination. But their trip to mars it’s the real world, so they could not take spiff’s spaceship, of course. That would be completely loony, eh?

Bon Voyage for Mars trip!
Andantonius said, 17 days ago
It’s amazing how they’re the first ones to ever get to Mars if all you need to get there is a wagon.

If all it takes is imagination and a red wagon, I’m afraid I beat this pair to Mars by at least a decade. :)

The friction caused by impacting the Martian atmosphere at 5.5 kilometers per second (the average speed of a Mars lander mission) heats the leading surfaces of the spacecraft to approx. 8000 Kelvin for up to 45 seconds or more.
If they didn’t need a heat shield and/or guidance system to get through EDL (Entry, Descent & Landing), then I doubt that they’d need breathing masks, space suits, food, water, maps or anything else but their imaginations. For that matter, they could just pick up a disposable camera at the local Mars Walmart while they get their lattes at the Mars Starbucks.

But then, if there are Walmarts and Starbucks on Mars when they arrive, then they can’t be the first on Mars, now can they?
Ah, forget it. Sometimes you just have to bow to the absurd. :)
Thanks for the NASA link! :D

I think the leading surfaces would probably heat up to something closer to 8 bajillion degrees CALVIN…
;)
and why the BONK at landing??? I thought scientific progress went BOINK!

As stated once at Broom Hilda’s, They made it this way, because nobody told them they can’t!

treBsdrawkcaB: Thanks for the NASA link! It’ll be fun discovering all about space with my granddaughter!
Many wars were fought in generations of our family over who’s responsibility it was to bring the camera! I’ve been to friends and family get togethers where the host sets out a whole bunch of disposable cameras for their guests. I’ve even seen pictures that kids have taken at birthday parties where they were given disposable cameras. I think it’s a great way to keep the party going!
