Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

I’m glad you’re having second thoughts, calvin..

This idea probably came from The Twilight Zone.

A conscience?? What’s happening to Calvin?

Shades of “Them!” (1954) and “Legion of Fire–Killer Ants” (1998).

Maybe I won’t!

OMG he actually has a conscience.

Margarituem: Yes, second thoughts can turn often into better!

Such strips restore your faith in Calvin sufficiently to make you wait eagerly for the next day’s strip; and then …

I think somebody here has seen way to many mutated giant killer ant movies.

C’mon, Calvin, be a real hero for once. Be the destroyer who distroys the destroyer. The whole universe will rise up to recognise and honor you BRAAAVOOOO!

Next, Calvin will bring the entire ant colony home for dinner.
Why not a sense of hospitality along with a conscience?
unemandarine said, about 1 month ago
Rethinking is a good thing Calvin…
Puddleglum2 said, about 1 month ago
If Calvin brings them home for supper they could have pizza with ‘antchovies’.
…or Calvin could bring them home for breakfast. They could have Ant Jemima Pancakes.

Imagination as a force for good.
Destiny23 said, about 1 month ago
Of course, if those are fire ants, Calvin is doing HIMSELF a favour by not stepping on them!

A reprieve from Calvin. What’s the catch?!

hey calvin, look at today’s BC!
MisterP58 said, about 1 month ago
That’s funny how everyone is saying Calvin has a conscience. For years I have always interpreted this as Calvin worried about a giant ant taking revenge.
threlfallm said, about 1 month ago
Another possible interpretation is “Maybe I won’t…get smashed because I’m about to smash the ants first.”

@MisterP58 - you’re right about that.
The year was 1977: Empire of the Ants
LOL!
Fer Lefer said, about 1 month ago
I agree with MisterP58: he has not conscience (at least, as we understand it), but affraid of retaliation: Se he’s not “green”… but “yellow”
… but we can give him the credit for planning…

You don’t smash the hill, you wipe it away and then push the dirt back over the hole so it fills it in. The more time they have to spend repairing the hill the less time they have to gather food and this encourages them to move on to greener pastures without killing them.

He’s thinking about himself, I think.
Personally, I dont want any kind of ants on my grounds. I’ll go for the ant/fire ant killer every time I see the signs of infestation.

I’m currently at WAR with some pesky little house ants. I’m much bigger but badly outnumbered. Appears to be draw thus far.
I’ll keep y’all posted.

I would ask Hobbes about this one.
Josh said, about 1 month ago
he’s basically thinking “How would I feel if the roles were reversed?” After doing so, he decided not to.
grammahotsho said, about 1 month ago
Calvin evidenty hasn’t heard about ants in your pants.

Lesson I learned many years ago: Destruction is so much easier, but ultimately less satisfying than Building up.
@Grazer, be careful. I heard about a short story of man (with flamethrower, like Calvin always wanted) vs. army ants many years ago, but never tracked it down until just now at here. Cautionary tale…
Vonnegut said, about 1 month ago
Calvinism succumbs to Buddhism. No bad karma for Calvin today!
Rmom said, about 1 month ago
Bmonk - That is quite the tale! I just read it for the first time a few months ago.

Criminy! I’ve always enjoyed Calvin & Hobbs but I never realized it was so deep. I just thought it was cute. Guess that’s an indication of how shallow I am.

just hope hobbs doesn’t sneak up behind him and scare him into stepping on the ant hill

grazer: You are indeed outnumbered. We all are. The biomass of ants on the planet greatly exceeds that of humans.
Have you tried Terro? It’s a bait (sugar water) that ants take back to their nest where it wipes out the queen and everyone else. The active ingredient is boric acid, which is harmless to humans and environmentally pretty innocuous (I believe). I love watching them grabbing it up and heading back to the nest, thinking what a bounty they’ve found.
OldHipster said, about 1 month ago
Yeah, I remember that episode of the Twilight Zone. Also the one where the old lady is alone and sees tiny aliens in a tiny saucer and starts smashing the saucer. Then you hear the aliens distress message sending a message back to EARTH and suddenly realize that these are explorers from EARTH trying to escape the giant race of mad women trying to kill them! This could be a variation of a Star Trek episode, also, but I won’t go onto that, now.

Good advice Ray , good luck with your campaign Grazer .
stonerock94 said, about 1 month ago
Well, Calvin likes things like that, so I think THATS why he might not do it. If you recall, Calvin has pretended to be an ant many times in the past.
stonerock94 said, about 1 month ago
Bald716, Hobbes is too logical to scare Calvin into doing that.
ratlum said, about 1 month ago
I wish Hobbes was here His take on things like this are pretty good
