At that age girls are much smarter than boys! One of the reason the two genders don’t usually get along well at that point in their lives. Give him about 6 years…..:)
Girls much smarter than boys at that age? Even were that true (and I don’t buy it), I must’ve been an exception to a lot of rules. I always liked most girls better than most boys (though my very closest friends were boys), never passed through a stage where I didn’t like girls (though I do recall a certain male-superiority complex, mercifully brief, about age 13), and yielded mental superiority to no one of either sex (even adults). I think I saw, respected and learned from wisdom, most of the time.
Now, so much later, I understand why. For one thing, I was like Calvin’s transmogrified good twin (though far from without his brand of mischief or incompetence): a Jungian ENFP in development who started off having more in common than most males do with most females. For another, I had a mother who had hard dealings with the male gender and who overcompensated enough so that I had to look past preconceived notions of male or female superiority. And later, I had the best religious teachers one could possibly ask for.
I call into question the whole sterotypical idea that females are “smarter” than males (or vice versa). For one thing, there are more geniuses and more morons among males. For another, there are overall differences in kinds of intelligence and how they’re arrayed. It also takes most males longer to mature emotionally. Calvin isn’t dumb compared to Susie - he’s just more self-centered.
Can you tell that one of my hot buttons has been pressed? :)
Hey, BC13 (about eight posts before mine here) -
How could Calvin learn from the plumbing fiasco in time for today’s strip? It looks like today’s art is drawn about 20 years before the plumbing episode.
Calvin is an old, old man. He’s been in reruns for ages. Can it be that, as of October 1, we are witnessing the cusp at which the final “new” strips have been published and we return once again to the earliest? A milestone relic, even?
This feels like going back to the 1950s Peanuts strips (such as one in which Patty very understandably mistakes Charlie Brown for a beachball while he’s swimming). Susie is wearing the overalls of a 2-year-old, right before most girls get hooked on Twirly Dresses 24/7. (I don’t think she kept wearing overalls forever, did she?) Anyway, it’s an old strip.
Rakkav: You are essentially correct. 6 year old girls aren’t necessarily smarter than boys, but they are more mature. Susie’s ability to see through Calvin stems from her relative maturity, the same reason as the rest of us. Watterson was (is?) a genius, and Calvin’s pretty smart, too - look at his vocabulary at times!

“C’mon, Calvin…You know you love her. :)”
Calvin is Susie’s beau (bow), now. Cupid’s arrow has hit Calvin ‘right on the nose’, although not through the heart.
“For all have sinned, and come short (miss the mark) of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23
If this were a real arrow instead of a suction cup arrow Calvin would be in the Guinness Book as the person with the most holes in his/her nose. (Not counting piercings.)
Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

There are times when you should never “play dumb”. Dealing with women are one of those times. They already know men are dumb. Calvin just proved it.

Probably just the bow sjoujke (and vinaybhatta)–since arrows usually need to be impelled FROM one.
(so, even if he’d dressed as “English soldier at Agincourt”, he would have been busted due to the bow)

Yesterday’s strip is dated 8/17 while today’s is dated 8/18 (bottom left hand corner of the 4th panel). FYI, C&H only ran for 10 years.

Calvin in 2009: married to Susie, with a 9 year old son, Calvin Jr., who makes his dad look like an amateur trouble maker..
….meanwhile, Calvin Jr’s grandfather is finally content in the way things are coming around on his son. Karma may take its time but it will show up.

It’s those that stop sinning after genuine repentance that get closest to the mark though.
Shall we then go on sinning?
Nope.
I couldn’t resist that one……. or maybe he missed intentionally to get a shot at the old saying ‘Missed me, missed me, now you gotta kiss me.’
I doubt that would be Susie’s next line though.
