Hobbes is showing excellent control of his claws. I don’t think my cats could hold a water balloon without popping it!

Sure they can. Cats can pull those claws in and have the gentlest paws and touch your face in the most loving way. I have had cats for over 40 years and had many a gentle cat.

Di-hydrogen oxide, by any other name, will get Calvin just as wet. :)

EMET, if memory serves: bi- points to two negative ions; di- points to two positive ions. Water has two positive ions.

My girlfriend used to have an apartment downtown. Her neighbors and her used to drop waterballoons on each other and their friends from their second-storey apartment windows in the summer. Once in awhile an innocent by standard would get hit though and they’d get in trouble but it never stopped the fun. I learned about it when I was going to the bank and hardware store downtown one day and my friend dropped one on my head as I was walking by her building. It was a hot day so it was a relief after the cold water shock wore off. I definitely got some comments walking into the bank and hardware store drenched afterwards! Good times! Good times!

I hope Hobbes don’t make a mistake - so easy made in a laboratory - and don’t use dihydrogen dioxide. He he he ….. I wonder what the effect would be in that case.

  19. SQUIDBREAKER

    @Rakkav -

Dihydrogen sounds negaive but is really positive. Bihydrogen sounds like your going shopping on Wall Street but you up with really negative water that just doesn’t get along very well.

It looks like its a double negative day for these two.

(I graduated tops in class from Technical Chemistry, albeit some would think I have very little class.)

    October 31st maybe?

I should have gotten up earlier. This cartoon is begging for oodles of comments, and the early birds have already appeared.
Firstly, let’s start a controversy. Strictly speaking, shouldn’t it be “What do you have in back of your back?” Behind connotes action; in back of is passive.
I realize everybody says it the way Calvin did.
I’ll be BACK later. I can hear a chorus of “Thanks for the warning”. I’m not sneaky as Hobbes is (not LIKE HOBBES).

You say pah-tot-oe, I say po-tate-oe… is there something about Calvin and Hobbes that attracts chemists?? All are equally valid in various contexts, but as a chemical engineer, I prefer Superfrog’s hydrogen hydroxide - more clearly communicates the nature of the acid/base beast that it is (ionizing as it does into hydrogen and hydroxide ions).

Ahhh,, but I digress and bore y’all to tears, I’m sure. Much more interesting to wonder what the next strip holds…

It’s a good thing the car won’t start to go BACK home. Otherwise, Calvin and Hobbes would be in trouble for malingering (two days).
It started as an ice pack, but the heat from the solar panels in Hobbes’ tummy went through his back and melted the ice.

As I was taught whilst growing up…if you can safely take a bath, you can safely walk under a dihydrogen oxide bombing…or, something to that effect…but, then again, were talking Calvin here, where baths are geysers of super-heated water, sooooooo…

Heh, wait until I introduce you all to someone I know at the University of Houston. He could point out to you all the combinations of hydrogen and oxygen that are found in water (some of which, he claims, are actually carcinogens).

DHMO.org is a trip! :) My friend would love that site!

I also used to call it Hydrohydroxic acid. But, by whatever name, this substance really needs to be strictly controlled. Overdoses kill! It is the largest component in almost every alcoholic drink! In solid form, it is very dangerous, killing hundreds of drivers every year when it gets under their cars or trucks! I could go on, but you get the idea.

GOOD GRIEF is Charley Brown from Peanuts. Groversfather is in the wrong comic strip. Maybe he should move out of Grover’s Corners if he doesn’t like “Our Town”. Cactusjack probably sat on the spines of one.
I’m the one who should be complaining. Many comments have been made about chemistry and none about English Grammar. Some are informative and some are amusing, and ‘never the twain shall meet’.

Macushlalondra: I agree they were very fortunate that no one ever called a lawyer. We live in a small town so I think people tend to have a better sense of humor here about pranks then in a more populated city. She said the cops came up occasionally and would give her and the others a stern talking to about the water balloons so they’d have to quit for the day. The next day things were business as usual. I still get the warning when going to the bank on a hot summer day to avoid that area because the balloons are flying! It’s good to know some traditions continue!

I’m definitely with THEDRIVER on this one. If they’re now back home again, why didn’t it show them driving home like it showed them driving to their camp-site? With dad’s glasses broken, how did they get home? Did mom drive or could dad still see well enough without them (like I can) to make it home safely? Just wondering why this particular comic strip was left (what felt like to me) unfinished when B.W. spent so much time on their camping trip — both getting there and while it was going on.
