Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

Sure she is, you just can’t see her eyes….

She will look when it is higher than her knees, Calvin. But by that time you will be upto your neck in water.

I get some variation on this from my daughter about five times a day. The school year can’t start soon enough.

at least the “thing that went ‘bump’ in the night” didn’t get him. i’m guessing dad is still untangling the fishing line after the little trip two days ago.
Yukoner said, 3 months ago
Mum, you’re blaming the wrong person for your foul mood. By the way, you could have stayed home. That might have made the trip better all the way round.

All in all, Mom’s not doing too badly: towel, bathing suit, glasses, novel…for many women, that’s the perfect summer vacation.
Funned out? Not quite. Just annoyed at everyone else’s foibles.

while we can all identify with Calvin’s childhood in some ways - for me the message of Calvin & Hobbs is to remind us as adults what a magical world we really live in as seen through Calvin’s eyes.
LX013 said, 3 months ago
Parents should show sometimes more interest! For a child diving into the water is a great event and Calvin wants to part it with his mother!

Mom could look if Calvin hadn’t broke the binoculars
Avolunteer said, 3 months ago
Mom is looking, she just doesn’t want to have to listen to the running commentary. As rayannina said it is a part of the age, and gets old very quickly.
carpetinwater9 said, 3 months ago
He won’t be in there long, the lake water is ice cold.
green_engineer said, 3 months ago
Ahh seems to me that Calvin is actually enjoying his holiday! Much more could be said about his parents though!
LX013 said, 3 months ago
Look Calvin, soon your belly is under the water!
prasrinivara said, 3 months ago
Not quite Yukoner–though it would have improved the trip for her.
Green Engineer, that’s not enjoyment–it’s only “salvaging some juice from the lemons”.

That would be a BIG TEN-FOUR or Roger, not both. Does anyone still even have a CB?

I can sympathise with Calvin … I used to do that a lot to my mum!
Also loved to burn things as well … I see a lot of myself in that kid … though according to my mother, I was far “tamer” apparently, she didn’t realise what angels me and my younger brother were until she read Calvin and Hobbes!

It may look like Mom’s having fun to some, but after being stuck home alone with him while Dad’s out working, a vacation just isn’t a vacation unless Calvin isn’t there to share it with her. And then there’s the camping thing. I don’t think that would be her first choice on her list of vacationing activities.

She’s waiting for when the water’s above his mouth and he can’t talk. At first, she’ll enjoy the peace and quiet, and then she’ll realize something’s wrong because of the peace and quiet and go into panic mode.

Didn’t we do this a couple weeks ago on “For Better or For Worse”? Micheal was telling mom to watch him in the water over and over and over til finally Elly got fed up and took a walk leaving her husband John to watch Michael.

calvin, get her back by going in over your head. pretend that you’re drowning and she’ll have to get all wet saving you.

Hmm… I feel like those who are critical of Calvin’s mom are misunderstanding something very basic….
Waterson does more than just capturing the magic and imagination of childhood - he also does a masterful job of capturing what it’s like for he parents involved - which is sometimes joyous and sometimes not that fun - or more fun for the kid than it is for the adults. Remember all those pranks that Calvin pulls on his babysitter and on his parents when he thinks he’s Spaceman Spiff? Waterson does a wonderful job of showing how that feels for Calvin - as well as how tiring that is for the parents sometimes…
And I don’t care if you think you’re super-parent - no parent can hang on their kid’s every word and watch their kid’s every motion with bated breath - especially if the kid is so attention seeking that they insist on chattering constantly and literally asking for the parent to look at every trivial thing they do and to comment on every word they utter. If you haven’t experienced the full-surround wall of sound from a little kid - then you truly don’t know what it’s like to be around a kid who is being that demanding… It can be very exhausting! I’ve had the experience where a kid won’t let me read a single page of a book - as if I’m somehow not allowed to have a moment or a thought to myself - it can drive anyone up a tree. And for purposes of this cartoon strip - I’m sure that the creek that Calvin is exploring isn’t particularly deep and that Calvin’s mom is allowed to read a novel without being accused of neglecting Calvin’s needs…. Well…. she probably won’t get a chance to read a novel with Calvin’s constant commentary - but oh well…

VIBJYOR - Calvin is going in deeper and deeper, that’s all. Lakes don’t rise that fast.
As for the mom, it’s not sarcasm, it’s not a “foul mood”, it just indifference.
And Calvin IS acting like a 2-year old, not whatever age he’s suppose to be.

my nephew is a trucker and he doesn’t use a CB anynmore, he has 2 different cell phones so he can have total country wide coverage

Hey fermiproblem, you made me feel better. If even a supermom,(which I wasn’t) could get numb from the antics of Calvin, then maybe it was ok if I literally puked my guts up from the antics of not one, but get this…. tada! Three of him!

Reminds me of the Nationwide Ins ad where the Husband asks his wife what the Light Switch onthe lft does. Her Reply; “I don’t Know, I never use it.”
He tells her to look as he flips switch on, He asks her if anything happend. She says No, He asks if she’s looking, She lies and tells him she is while she’s reading the paper. Husband continues to flip switch on and off, the end of the ad, the lady next door is frightend to see the Garage Door attack the Hood of Her car.
… Nationwide is on your side.

Here’s what Calvin and Mom reminded me of…
Arthur: “I’ve decided to take a bath.”
Hobson: “I shall alert the media.”
Arthur: “Do you want to run my bath for me?”
Hobson: “It is what I live for.”
R.I.P. Sir John Gielgud and Dudley Moore.
OldHipster said, 3 months ago
Yeaaaahhhhhhh, I remember the next line….
Hobson: Would you like your ** washed for you, sir?
Arthur is too drunk to respond.

Yes, parents should give their children more attention so the kids don’t have to misbehave to get it. And, yes, kids can be incredibly irritating. I can identify with both positions.
