Three out of three things have gone wrong and not one of them was Calvin’s fault. If good old dad decided to go against his character and be pleasant, Calvin would probably tell him about the headlights.
Cleo, it was the camera (and other things) which were dropped. But I agree, always make sure the kid (or grown-up for that matter) has a good grip before releasing yours.
There’s nothing they can do about the headlights now, anyway, By this time the battery is probably dead, anyway. Dad should have handed the bag to mom if he really wanted to protect the items inside.
Dad is to blame for everything, the headlights, camera, binoculars, his glasses, and the attitude Mom is going to get before too long. Calvin and Hobbs should just frolic in the woods and have a good time.
Reminds me, somwhat, of insane moments my parents had when I was a child. Then, I grew up and had a couple of children of my own and had a revelation of WHY they had their insane moments.
rshive - Back when this strip was originally run, i believe that most if not all cars did not have the feature that shuts headlights off automatically.
Bet they won’t go camping again for a while - this trip has been a disaster. The worst part - Calvin will be able to say “I told you so” since he was against the idea in the first place.
”rshive - Back when this strip was originally run, i believe that most if not all cars did not have the feature that shuts headlights off automatically.”
I’m not sure that’s what rshive meant. If you wait long enough, like a day or two–no more shining headlights.
And I agree, Hobbes should tell him. Only question is, will Dad listen, errr…hear?
baslim, the camera was mentioned verbally at the incident, but in yesterday’s strip, Dad surfaces with the binoculars as well, the camera is already in the retreived pile”.
Good eyes Jon, I had to scroll back to catch the binoculars.
I wish I could go on vacations. Mine won’t be camping. Be entertainment. Although looks like Calvin is starting to have fun exploring. I agree about the lights back then no automactic turn off for lights. Even my car I have to turn my own headlights off its a 2000 model.
3hourtour: Do you ever actually LOOK at the cartoons or do you just use this venue to make snarky comments about Obama? Every time I see your name, your comment has NOTHING to do with the joke.
I can just see it this way
Every buddy falls a sleep
Cavin wakes his dad about 1 hour later when its dark and tells him he forgot to turn out the lights
Remember the car is parked facing away from the lake to unload
not much sleep know
Calvinator … exactly right!
As for Dads’ … they have to know or judge when the time is right for each of their own sons to take responsibility. Best to let a kid be a kid. Can’t blame Calvin for something he really should have been doing himself… or maybe had Mom helping with in unloading the canoe.
Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

ejcapulet - Well, I think the binoculars were kind of a shared problem. His dad handed them to him, but he dropped them.

This is a prime example why GOD made DAD’S especially in the light of little people such as Calvin .

I am sure that Dad is an ex boy scout and so he knows that he needs to “Be Prepared”.
Camping is FUN. At least we had fun last week hiking in the St Elias Mountains.

I think Dad was trying to make Calvin feel important by helping unload the canoe. Calvin is a klutz. lol

I’d say this was a comedy of errors, but no one (not even Hobbes) is laughing at it.

Telling Calvin gets a yelling. As Hobbes is Calvin’s backup, he’d better go to the optitians with his Dad and pick out a cool pair.

Mom finally blowing a fuse should do it.

Dad is getting the vacation he deserves – he didn’t learn anything from last year’s 40 days of rainfall without the Ark..

What would be the point of telling dad about the lights… he couldn’t do anything about it.
