Sounds like my 11-year-old daughter. She hates 90% of what I make for dinner.

I bet we all went thru this phase; then we grow up and think “Nobody can cook like Mom used to, how I long for her homemade_. Fill in the blank your self, for me it was home made and baked breads and cinnamin rolls.

It isn’t that bad what mom is fixing for diner, Cal. But we know you like bug butter sandwhiches even better.

Do you think that, if she actually made a bug butter sandwich, would Calvin really eat it? Hmmmm, he just might.

Bald I’m sure it tatsed good (In fact, I think I’ll try it. It’s what it looked like that would gross people out. My mom made peanut butter and grape jam sandwiches for school. By the time it was lunch time, my sandwich was purple. Ugh! Tasted good though…I guess..

I thought my mom was a terrible cook while growing up. A half century later I’ve been lucky enough to sit at her table again. I was right all along. She’s a lousy cook.

as a picky eater, I know what Calvin means. But in some of the strips it is really hard to tell what mom prepared…. :-)

How did Calvin know while Mommy fixed the supper? I am sure we knew that Calvin hated liver, spinach, and brussel sprouts… what else?
Macushlalondra says: It’s probably the dreaded liver and spinach!
Ooooohhh, I love liver and spinach. YUM! :-P
EMET says: Apparently, Calvin is not a fan of manna casserole.
I never heard “manna casserole.” What does it look like?

I used to make peanut butter and jelly sandwich when I was kid and loved to eat it. But now I hate it because it tasted too much SWEET! :-p Ugh! I know it was good but it was too much sweet!

Wildmustang: “manna” is food that God gave to the Israelites in the desert. They grumbled about it too. Just like human nature, true of us all sometimes. You can read the story in Exodus chapter 16 in the bible, if you have one.

Mum seems a little bit disappointed for Calvin does not appriciate enough her cooking!
andres2u said, 6 months ago
Had to laugh at this one. My mom, God bless her,was a really bad cook. She openly admitted it was true. Many a night I’d cruise thru the kitchen and feel just like Calvin in this cartoon.

Ouch! As Kelso would say on “That 70’s Show”: “BURN!!!!!!!!!!”
But who can blame him? I never liked what my mom made for dinner when I was a kid either … especially when she made fried liver. YUCK!!!!!

Your right your are lucky. To all of you who criticize your mothers cooking: CAN YOU DO BETTER??????
musicnut1986 said, 6 months ago
Wildmustang, nobody knows exactly what manna was but based on information from the Bible and other historical writings manna resembled and tasted like large flakes of dried honey. All we really know is it provided for all of the nutriential needs of the Isrealites and each morning they gathered all they needed to sustain them for the day. And still the people complained. Free food from God. Go figure.
alicantina said, 6 months ago
Ouch! as a child you can (and want to) eat you favourite food every day without growing weary of it… amazing
SQUIDBREAKER said, 6 months ago
Wildmustang - here’s manna casserole details. Manna casserole - goes in bitter but comes out sweet as honey. (rev 10)The dogs love the crumbs. When we ‘eat’ the word of God, we realize we are the Wicked revealed. It is a bitter pill to swallow, but it brings us to a point of repentence and what then flows from our hearts to our mouths and beyond SHOULD be as sweet as honey. Big difference between should and shall though. Check John 3:16.’ Should’ is the accurate translation - a probability but not a guarantee because of stony hearts, unable to let the seed grow.
