Atleast the new improved version has one improvement - it has given Calvin a level playing field. In the original version, the fatalist’s fate was in Hobbes’ hands. What if [shudder] Hobbes had set the dial to “Calvin the Angel” ?
One of those very rare cases where a Sunday strip gets incorporated into the story line from the dailies. Watterson explains in the 10th Anniversary Book that this was a pain to do because the Sundays had to be submitted much earlier than the daily strips.
The owl looks like a mad, pouting Calvin. But when Mom enters the room, she will have no problem. They will just look like her little boy and a stuffed toy tiger.
This is a problem. If Hobbes is a figment of Calvin’s imgaination, and Calvin turns Hobbes into Calvin, then “Calvin” turns Calvin into “Hobbes”, Hobbes will cease to exist, and Calvin will be stuck as a stuffed tiger forever.
Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

If they can’t remember who’s who, does it matter? One of them be Calvin and the other be Hobbes. Problem solved.

I think Calvin gives a hoot.
I think Mom always saw Calvin as a rabid animal anyway.

Why not both be Hobbes and let Mum sort it out. Mothers are good at that sort(ing) of things.

Calvin’s poor mother. How that woman isn’t in an institution for the insane is beyond me.

An inventive storyline which also gives the artist something different to draw.

What a great strip to follow on a Sunday. We get to see all the transmogrified images in color as well as the changing colors in the ZAPS. Love it.

Would have been funnier if Hobbes,as Hobbes, had zapped Calvin into a lady tiger.

Now, aerwalt, this is a family comic strip, but what the heck, that would have been good.

This is nearly as bad as women changing their hair color, only to realize they despise it, so they change it back to the original again.
