Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

There’s snow, there’s a sled, there’s excitement and…I’ve taken off my coat and boots to answer the freaking phone. ALRIGHT!!!

Susie’s going to grow up to be a nerd. (As if she’s not one already)

SO we know that Susie has his phone number but - yesterday she was yeling at him for wasting time in the library, now she wants him there.

Now I understand why Calvin desires so much wanting to hit Susie with a snowball.

‘Cause it’s been snowing outside…. Duh!
Boy! Is she gonna get a snowball up the back of the head ;)
Calvin really needs to educate his mom into the niceties of caller screening lol

Susie, like many others, seems to feel that being loud is the same as being right. Calvin, you need to agree with her, hang up the phone and then ignore her totally.

Calvin sledding on the hill,
Summoned to a phone-call shrill,
Susie wants an explanation,
But there is no reparation.
Poor Susie trowels on the guilt,
A futile ploy; he’ll never wilt.
She cannot grok he does not care,
And never will he do his share.
The Skulker, Dypak, and Tabbylynn were kind enough to compliment my last “Tiger Tiger” poem a week ago. I did not intend to be rude in not replying. My time on the computer is limited and usually I read several days’ worth of comics at one sitting and then don’t visit again for a few days. I had forgotten that I’d posted something here or I would have checked back sooner to see if anyone had responded. Please accept my apologies.
Tabbylynn said: I have a question, do you just come up with this when you see it, i mean does it just click and you type it? Or do you sit there for a while and think about it?
Neither, or both. When I decide to do a poem I stare at the strip and tell my brain, “Okay, poem!” A phrase based on the strip will occur. If the meter is correct and the rhyme looks feasible, I let it flow into the second line of the first couplet. The second couplet of each quatrain is usually harder than the first, for some reason. Usually I can crank out one or two quatrains in one to five minutes. But if I can’t produce meter, rhyme scheme, grammar, and content that satisfies me without cheating (that is, without wrenching words around into an unnatural-sounding locution), I won’t post … although Blake himself “cheated” in a couple of spots! (To refresh your memory: http://www.bartleby.com/101/489.html ) So, yes, it just comes; but then I make it come right.
Would the person who first started these poetic homages to Blake and Watterson please stand up and take a bow? I can’t remember who it was.

Let’s see:
1) you’re at the library
2) They won’t let me pile up stacks of books and magazines to sled down
3) I can’t make snowballs to pelt you with in the library
4) The librarians would just throw us out anyway because of your yelling and my spitwads.

I don’t understand how Susie can stand it. I admire her unlimited patience with Calvin.

I’m amazed at the artistry of this comic. Constantly!

Calvin may have thought it was Uncle Max calling him to tell him that he’s coming back for him.

Wow, a 1st grade report on Mercury, maybe we could take this a little more seriously?

mom if susie calls - i’m sick in bed
rawriamadinosaur said, 8 months ago
Haha I’m like that. If the telephone is for me then I get really excited, but it’s never anyone that I want to talk to lol!

Calvin now faces a very tough decision:
1) Spend the rest of the day in a stuffy library listening the brain numbing rants of an overstressed girl; or 2) Resume sledding in the crispy snow and fresh air.
I know what I would do.

AssOfDoom : “Wow, a 1st grade report on Mercury, maybe we could take this a little more seriously?”
All the more reason to not take it seriously. Even in a school for the gifted, they’d wait until second grade before assigning book reports. LOL
Susie should have appealed to Calvin’s strength. She’d do all the research (which she ended up doing anyway) but then assign Calvin to do all the artwork, based entirely on her research. Then she weeds out all the alien drawings and their project is finished. XD

Supposedly if Calvin and Susie have the computers to surf about Mercury, they can goggle for their reserach on Mercury. That will be very helpful!

@4deerinmyyard, nice poem. Especially since it uses “grok”; wasn’t sure that anybody else still remembers such things. It is from Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land, or from the poem/picture activity?
