Cleo, that’s animator. Eventually, there’ll be a Calvinland.

In the “How it could actually work” section it was pointed out that doing it like a Peanuts animation would be the best way to render it. I too respect a guy who’s not bowled over by a call from the beard.

Susie, Calvin has actually produced a Mars animation. What have you done so far except organize a pity party?

Instead of researching the planet Mercury Calvin is researching the planet Mars. Didn’t he listen well or has he to consult an ear specialist ?

  10. hamsterface

    hamsterface said, 8 months ago

I don’t think Mercurian would make sense as much as martian would to people in the 80s/90s

Calvin doesn’t do research, he makes things up. It’s easier and more fun that way.

    baslim_the_beggerGenius_badge said, 8 months ago

But Calvin does seem to have a mercurial nature… and Susie’s nature is hysterical (subject to hysteria)

    Calvin’s analysis (maybe)
    What’s Mercury? another planet
What comes from another planet? alien monsters
Where do the alien monsters come from? Mars of course

Every good presentation has a mix of hard content (word and details) and soft content (pictures, graphics - visual appeal). Suzie needs to understand that Calvin can add color and flair to her boring report - thus rendering it interesting, provocative and awe inspiring. A+

Susie just go to the teacher and tell her what Calvin’s doing. Then do the project yourself.

Classic. Calvin has such a big heart … even if he is terribly misguided.

I love Calvin’s expression in the second frame. It’s as if he doesn’t realize he’s been goofing off until he looks at the evidence. I’ve been there.

Hey Calvin, is that a “Potato-Man” on that sheet-o-paper in the 2nd Panel? LOLLLL

Hey Susie, ur eyes will pop out of those sockets if you wont stop ‘drooooling’ on the Calvin’s drawing like that, LOL!

Panel 4.. Awwww… Love the atmosphere Calvin’s spreadind onto Susie, “Joy and Laugh even when in despair”!

How about if Susie does the report and Calvin does art for it? He seems to have a knack for it! The could use his drawings as examples for life on Mercury! :-)

Boy, Susie is wound too tight. I seriously doubt one failing 1st grade project will prevent her admittence into an ivy league school. Even MU in Columbia would still accept her.

A picture is worth a thousand words, Susie.

I submitted cool drawings and captions for a coupla book reports and got A’s for creativity and neatness. Never read the books, just asked some friends what the heck it was about. Junior high.

“The Beard”…what the hell does that mean? Are supposed to allow that “beard” is close to “bard” and thus we shuld attach some reverence to him? I think not…

Gweedo: you mention the “Peanuts” angle…do you think that would work?

    Calvin:
    1) is smart enough to know that Mars can (or once could) sustain life amd mercury cannot.
    2) has created a clever art presentation in his flip page drawings.
Susie has ranted raved, drove herself into a neurotic fit and is about to blow a gasket.
Which child is better balanced, more productive and ready for real life?

Apparently Susie’s parents belong to that ilk that think if their kid doesn’t perform perfectly from pre-school onward, said kid will never get into Haahvard or Yale. Way too much stress to put on a little kid.

Of course she’s stressing. She’s six. The first grade is the cutting edge and highest achievement of her life. When she’s ten, she’ll think it’s over the top, but now she’s only six.

I’ve only just discovered this site and am very surprised (and exceedingly pleased) to find that Watterson is still drawing these lovely things. I remember picking up “Something Under The Bed Is Drooling” when I was about eight, and that was it. Nothing like it, just something beautiful. I’m such a sap, a few of these strips have even moved me to tears. Of course, most of them just make me grin like a melon, and there are so few things that can really do that, without fail. Oh, a boy and his tiger…what more could anyone ask for?

  37. bmonk

    bmonkGenius_badge said, 8 months ago

Actually, thepratingknave, no such luck. These are all reruns. But no less enjoyable for that. :-)

And I agree with many here: a classic mismatch of learning styles. Neither one is being very productive. But we grown-ups all know how rarely that sort of mismatch happens in real life work. :P

Well, that’s alright. I did think they looked a little dated…thought maybe BW was just stubbornly refusing to expose his characters to the horrors of such modern technological monstrosities as “THE EYE-POD” and “THE BLACK BURY”…
