Being funny without dialog is a rare gift among cartoonists.

Yep…imaginery friends can be very real…when I was young, the West was completely cleared of “bad guys” on a daily basis by me & the Durango Kid…lol.

    *bkharvey says:
See Hobbes HAS to be real how else could Calvin get himself up there?*

That’s the same question regularly asked by Calvin’s Mother/Father/Teacher/etc. How do kids manage to get themselves into half the predicaments they get into? The Mystery of Hobbes is the Mystery of 6 year-olds everywhere.

If Hobbes is imaginary, then Calvin is only imagining himself up higher than he is.

Now, if Hobbes is real, why does he appear as a plushie to everyone else?
Why doesn’t Hobbes just carry Calvin in front of people? Either Calvin’s floating, or he’s down on the ground faking it all. Then we’d all know for sure.

Maybe Calvin is a mutant, and his imagination turns real, but only for himself?

Hobbes is totally real!!! How else did Calvin get all tied up to the chair in that one strip where he’s trying to be an escape artist?!
    :) :) :)

Bill Watterson has said that the nature of Hobbes’ reality doesn’t concern him. I wish I had the direct quote (it was in the 10th Anniversary Edition), but he said that Calvin sees Hobbes one way, and everyone else sees him another. We all see the world differently and he just draws that literally in the strip.

He also said that Hobbes is definitely not a stuffed animal that magically comes to life around Calvin.
