Started out thinking, “Aw, how cute…Pagelow is doing a tender moment strip for a change in honour of Christmas”…….then looked to the right.

I remember being traumatised by Hans Andersen’s story of the Christmas tree…I guess I wasn’t the only one.

Why the X’s on the tree? It’s still alive or the needles would be dried up and falling off.

He’s still brain-dead, but on life support. After Christmas, they’ll pull the plug and put his lights out.

    It’s still alive
No, once you cut a tree from its roots (which is what is usually done), it’s no longer alive. It needs its roots to take up nourishment. If you put it in water, there will be osmosis that draws enough water in to keep the needles from drying out right away, but ultimately, it’s a dead tree. There are folks who pull the tree and its roots, with the intent of planting it after the holiday, but most people don’t do that.
The tree is dead and the relatives crying outside the window know it….Pagelow should have included a weeping willow among the mourners….

Well I too was taken in by this cozy scene until I saw what was outside the window.

    re: argy-bargy

the xylem, the cambium, the petioles, and the needles are still alive for a time. When the tree finally dies, the needles dry up and fall off.
