we could easily lift ourselves out of this recession and solve our immigration challenges at the same time. mexico can easily do the manufacturing that china does for us. when that happens, americans might even decide to relocate south of the border.

moreover, we won’t be financing china’s military buildup either. that’s one war, in particular, i don’t look forward to fighting.

Mexico used to do many of the jobs done in China. It got cheaper, even with transport costs, to have the Chinese do them. There is still manufacturing done for the U.S. just over the borders in what remains of the maquiladoras.

Either way you look at it, if we don’t change our profligate ways, we’re up the proverbial creek.

It’s simple. Just require importing countries / manufactures meet the same environmental, health, and safety requirements that are required of those operating in the U.S. Once that’s done it won’t be as cost effective to export jobs (and pollution) to those countries.

And products will then cost so much more than we do now, we will have to print more money so we can pay for them. Yay!

Or maybe we will just have to learn to get along with less stuff. IMHO, we overconsume to the point of the obcene.

Right_On - so we should just keep the status quo and keep exporting our jobs and pollution?

It won’t matter what the products cost when no one is working.
