Living in an enchanted forest with surrealistic landscapes, the engaging characters of Broom Hilda happily have no connection with reality. Other comic characters are extensions or distortions of reality, but Broom Hilda deals in pure fantasy, making the strip bewitchingly unique. Here in the forest, the inhabitants maintain a standard of madness where total irrelevance is the only relevancy. The strip is simply a loony-bin where what’s said and done often makes no sense whatsoever, much to the joy of its millions of fans.

Good morning, LB.

I like your new look Broomie.
MARG! Yesterday was a sad day for me. Had to
take my 16 year old cat to the Vet’s and have it
put to sleep’ It quit eating and was down to only
six pounds. Will miss him as he was like a family
member. I’m surprised your Greyhound is still
living. That breed usually doesn’t make it past
ten due to their small heart. You will miss him
to when he leaves this world.

I’m sorry about your kitty. We had to put our little 16 year old dog down on 11-12. She started having serial seizures, and required so much medicine to stop the seizures that she couldn’t even open her eyes. I held her in my lap, and petted her, and told her what a good dog she had been.

Aye margueritem, there’s nothing sadder than the loss of a loved one, with the children all grown and gone your pets ARE your family; and the loss of one would hurt no less than the loss of any member of anyone’s family.

Condolences to both Llewellenbruce and margueritem on the loss of loved pets.

Broomie, you don’t do “The Hair Toss” until after you’ve had your hair styled!

What a sad thread.
Aren’t there any funny comments about the strip?
Such as Broomie’s talent to make herself look ridiculous?

When I saw this strip at another newspaper, all I could think of was; Olivia probably had hair drawn with a chisel marker and Broomie a 0.5 pencil.

It said toss, not TOSS!

I, too, am sorry to hear about your losses. My mother who lives alone, just had to have her companion cat of eight years put to sleep, kidney problems. It’s lonely without them.

@Llewellenbruce
Greyhounds have over-sized hearts compared to their weight and commonly live to 14-15 years. My Katie Bell lived to be 14 and might have lasted longer, but she injured herself falling into a ditch. Breeding 5-year old winners makes for very healthy animals.

Yeah, the saucy toss is also a maneuver that takes plenty of charm training. The way Broomie did it wouldn’t have worked even if she’d started off with the right hairstyle. Sigh.

Thank you, everyone for sharing your stories of older pets, and for your sympathy. It’s sad to see them go, but we know that they had happy lives, and were well loved.

And they will meet us at the Rainbow Bridge sometime in the far distant future.

Will this do? My first thought was that Broomie brought a whole new meaning to the term “hair net”.

We’ll all be there.
