Living in an enchanted forest with surrealistic landscapes, the engaging characters of Broom Hilda happily have no connection with reality. Other comic characters are extensions or distortions of reality, but Broom Hilda deals in pure fantasy, making the strip bewitchingly unique. Here in the forest, the inhabitants maintain a standard of madness where total irrelevance is the only relevancy. The strip is simply a loony-bin where what’s said and done often makes no sense whatsoever, much to the joy of its millions of fans.

See, Broomie? They may smoke other things, but not cigars.

The blond geek doesn’t look very proficient in cigar-smoking, but I guess he’ll serve as as a dummy for demonstration-purposes….

I gave up smoking the easy way - I never started.

I remember the first strips where she used to smoke a stinking cigar… I regret those days!
(the same thing happened with Lucky Luke, he stopped rolling his cigarettes in order not to be a bad model for the kids… SIGH!)

Seeing woman who smoke cigars is a strange sight. With Broomie though, it almost seems natural somehow.
And I do remember those days when she did smoke a cigar.

thanks for quitting smoking broomie, it is a good choice, if the kids don’t see you do it, maybe they won’t ever start.

Wasn’t it some actor named Tony Curtis who started wearing a badge on his coat that said “I quit smoking”, but later got busted for having so much marijuana on him that he said it was for his OWN use? His badge should have said “I quit….cigerettes, that is”

In a Sunday strip, Broomie once told Gaylord that her father had put $10 into a bank account in her name when she was only ten years old. Gaylord calculated that Broomie, after 1500 years of accumulating interest, must now be the richest person in the world, but she said, “Too bad I snuck it out the next day to buy cigars.”
Today, that lesson could apply to people who go to Starbucks.

Make it four.
However, I still suffer the fools who DO smoke, when I have to breathe in their second-hand fumes.

Broom Hilda used to smoke? Good thing she doesn’t anymore. Afterb reading this, I realized that, after five years or so of going used bookstores, I don’t have a single Broom Hilda book in my book collection. Probably should remedy that soon.
