Living in an enchanted forest with surrealistic landscapes, the engaging characters of Broom Hilda happily have no connection with reality. Other comic characters are extensions or distortions of reality, but Broom Hilda deals in pure fantasy, making the strip bewitchingly unique. Here in the forest, the inhabitants maintain a standard of madness where total irrelevance is the only relevancy. The strip is simply a loony-bin where what’s said and done often makes no sense whatsoever, much to the joy of its millions of fans.

I’m familiar with ‘wet dog smell’ – I hate to think what ‘wet Irwin’ smells like!

BC13: I suspect you are rather young and missed the wonderful popular songs of the first 2/3’s of the 20th century. “Let a Smile be Your Umbrella” is not one of the great masterpieces, but it has its perky charms.
You can find many performances of it on YouTube. The Julie Andrews tribute is a nice duet with Gene Kelly, but the choppy video is joltingly unrelated to the audio. And I recommend avoiding the barbershop chorus version which sent chills down my spine and not in a good way. But YouTube is a great way to get caught up whenever an unknown song comes up.

no one can see the tears, when you are crying in the rain…

as long as you’re “Singing in the Rain” it doesn’t matter.

I love how the raindrops are drawn in the second panel … makes me wish I could be there with Irwin.

You have to remember that all of the regulars in this strip live out of doors in an enchanted forest.
The trolls, Irwin and Nerwin, remind me of Spook in the “Wizard of Id.”
The two trolls in this strip are not like the trolls of the fairy tales and fables at all.

Does anyone even remember what “Spook” is in the dungeon for in the first place?

Irwin & Nerwin remind me of Cousin It from The Addams Family.

ahhh but a stroll in the rain with your favorite person can be romantic, with or without a smile or an umbrella,
well as long as it isn’t a downpour
RinaFarina said, 3 months ago
And Irwin said, “Let there be an umbrella!” and there was an umbrella!
or does anyone know of a better explanation of how that umbrella came to be there?

Thanks for your input. I’m not much on You Tube, but I am an avid watcher of TCM, but tend to lean toward gangster, espionage, war, comedy etc rather than musicals - unless they are the seasonal variety (Easter Parade, White Christmas, Holiday Inn, Going My Way etc - which I own). You may be surprised to know that I’ve got a Glenn Miller CD and a couple of mixed swing CD’s. I also own the Glenn Miller story and am soon to purchase the Fabulous Dorseys. And I do have the Sound of Music, South Pacific and select Doris Day films such as Calamity Ja.ne, On Moonlight Bay & By the Light of the Silvery Moon
You might say I own select pieces of the past from some of my favorite actors, such as Bogart, Bacall, Bergman, Cagney, Crosby, Gable, Grant, Stanwyck & Stewart. I am also collecting films from the master of suspense, himself, and currently have most of his more popular fims and some of his not-so-popular films.

Don’t care much for old musicals, but I do love classic comedy. Laurel and hardy, Charlie Chaplin, the Three Stooges, Buster Keaton, The Marx Brothers, W.C.Fields,etc. I’m probably the only 20-something who loves this stuff. Most other members of my generation probably don’t even know who these guys are, unfortunately. Their loss, I guess.

Sadly, I do. He uttered the infamous “The King is a Fink.”
He was mugged and, as he was crawling for help, run over by the King in his carriage. The last straw was the carriage was the getaway vehicle for the mugger.

You’ll get stay drier with a smile and an umbrella than with a smile alone. (With apologies to Al Capone.)
