    Meanwhile…. no soil samples?

Once again, Brewster loses his chance to get a little h**d.

(Sorry, you guys…. you KNOW I’d never say that stuff here, if Dr. Mel hadn’t led me astray…. )

Brewster and the moon have a lot in common. They both have rocks in their heads.

I watched the moon landing with my dad on our 17" black and white TV. When he was a youngster people laughed at him because he said he thought someday they would put a man on the moon. An unforgettable moment.

    re: omnius

Ordinarily, I would simply ignore you. Let me educate you about certain events in space exploration.
    .
In 1986, the Democrats had an absolute majority in house and senate. They voted to end all nuclear propulsion research. This meant the death of manned space exploration. Instead of taking less than a week to get to mars using a gas core engine, no one can go because of the total three years in space.
    .
Consider the loss to science. Unmanned probes could have easily explored the outer solar system with the types of engines JPL used to work on. Even in 1970, the Orion Project had fission rockets that would “burn” for an hour. When JPL was stopped, prototypes existed for mercury gas core engines and work was progressing on a much more powerful argon gas core engine. Such could have taken us to mars and the outer planets.
    .
Consider, too, how much cheaper it is to refine a few hundred pounds of nuclear material (such as for a submarine-size reactor) versus millions of pounds of hydrogen and oxygen for a shuttle flight.
    .
As a regular Astronomy reader since 1980, it’s been depressing to see every president except Bush 43 have no vision whatsoever for the space program. It was cut under Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, and now Obama. As pointed out in Astronomy, since Bush 43 actually had goals for the program, NASA was energized for the first time in 3 decades.
    .
Now, everyone who knew how to do anything has retired from NASA in the last 3 years. The people who were around for Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, etc. have retired because of the current work environment there. As one Apollo astronaut suggested last year (runs in my mind that it was Schmidt, ut I’ve forgotten), it needs to be shut down, and a new agency created that will do the things NASA used to do.
