Donut speaking to another doughnut, cuing Commodore Decker’s state of horror, “I SAW IT! He took one of us and put it in a cup of hot liquid. It turned all mushy, but was still alive. Then, it was eaten. Oh, the Doughnuttity!”

Are all American doughnuts round with holes in? I like the ones we get here in the UK – round (no holes) and filled with jam (jelly to you), custard, toffee sauce. I would also like to see savoury ones filled with bolognaise, curry, chilli…..

    re: pcolli

Doughnuts usually have holes, but the size of the hole varies widely, from a tiny gap to a large hole. Supposedly the reason for the holes was that the pastry cooked more evenly. Pastries without holes normally are called something else, depending on what it is.
    .
While shaped similarly, what Jewish friends called “Hebrew teething rings”, or bagels, are not sweet cake/pastry like a doughnut, but they are breadlike. Those often have butter, cream cheese, meat, or other non-sweet fillings. Or sweet fillings. They are pretty versatile. People sometimes will put peanut butter and jelly on them, eating them like a sandwich.
