   An earlier comment I made seems to have been deleted. – Sigma Octans is 1 degree away but it’s fifth-magnitude, meaning it’s very hard to spot save on very clear, dark night and it’s not at all prominent. You can triangulate pretty well from three of the overabundance of bright stars you have down there though, even if you have to do so using wide arcs through the sky.
