    The car keys star would be Vega.

    Rule #1: Don’t get lost during the day, only at night.
    Rule #2: Buy a GPS.

    Gee, I got an original idea for a poem about my love being as constant as the North Star. Bet she never heard anything like that.

    So what do we do in the Southern Hemisphere? Is there a South Star?

    @Sandfan

    An earlier comment I made seems to have been deleted. – Sigma Octans is 1 degree away but it’s fifth-magnitude, meaning it’s very hard to spot save on very clear, dark night and it’s not at all prominent. You can triangulate pretty well from three of the overabundance of bright stars you have down there though, even if you have to do so using wide arcs through the sky.

    Sigma Octantis (in the constellation Octans, that is).

    It’s good to have a rerminder 60 years after Boy Scouts, especially since the magnetic north pole has moved substantially during that period.

    Howzabout a star, device, etc., for finding a good parking spot when I go shopping?

    SherlockWatson: Just ask Gladys. Gladys, Gladys, full of grace, help me find a parking place. If she finds one for you thank her by saying: Gladys, Gladys, full of grace, thank you for the parking place.
    It works. Trust me, I’ve never been without a parking place since I’ve started asking her.
