    Aha…. Fun Etymology Fact….
    Davy Crockett fought against huge odds in many battles,
    but few people realised that the tail on his cap prevented his seeing that he was outnumbered.

    In homage, his admirers wore caps like his, but when he fell at the Alamo, they realised it would be safer to wear the tails in the back…

    This gave rise to the common expression, “Turn tail and run.”

    When they filmed the Daniel Boone TV show, Fess Parker, the actor who played Daniel Boone, wore a coonskin cap… despite the fact that the real Daniel Boone detested them.
    (Actually, until recently, I thought Daniel Boone was a fictional character. Hey, I’m Canadian, we learned about Champlain and Henry Hudson.)
    Did Davy Crockett ever meet Daniel Boone?

    Davey, Davey Crockett, king of the coon skin caps.

    @Bruno Zeigerts

    Highly unlikely that Boone and Crockett met. Boone was about 46 years old when Crockett was born (1786) and moved to Missouri in 1799 and lived out his life there. Crockett was in Tennessee, and Congress until he went to Texas and died in 1836.

    @beviek

    Few people know that the first draft of the song had the line:
    .
    “Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Front Tail.”
    .
    It was his Tennessee accent that confused things… And who was it that wore a skunk-skin hat?

    Bruno Zeigerts: There is no record of Crockett wearing one either. A short stovepipe was preferred by both.

    Yeah Davy. You know, it’s just like sod; green side up. Or putting the potato in the front of your pants instead of the back.
