June Brigman and Mary Schmich’s classic soap-opera strip was a pioneer: a comic featuring a strong female lead character. Brenda Starr’s adventures, if not a realistic portrayal of a reporter’s life, have nevertheless captured the imagination of millions of readers.

I’d hire Basil to do my digging any day, even if he exercises bad judgement by getting involved with shady characters and rarely sees his kid.

The artifact-smuggling angle I’ve been predicting for weeks is about to be revealed. But I fear we are looking at another plot inconsistency here. Price tells Basil where to dig, as if he knows where the magic talisman is buried. So what was the point of kidnapping Sage? They had better have a good explanation for this one.

Hey! It’s okay for us guys to slobber over Brandy, but this female lust is just…it’s just…well…wrong. Next thing you know, girls will demand equal pay for being Mystery Women.
OMG, it’s already happened!! I’m going back to Mars.

Lessee–Brenda and Ringo are coming near the excavation sight. At the sound of horses’ hoofs (hooves?), Price will become distracted and look around. Then, Basil will deliver a roundhouse attack with that shovel, knocking him cold. Taking Price’s pistol, the three will then find Sage and Miella, but then Trad comes and… .

Price knows where the stuff is, but doesn’t have the muscles to do the digging himself. He knows he can’t hire just anybody (maybe the natives are superstitious and won’t go near the artifacts, or maybe it’s against their culture or religion to dig up old things), so he makes Basil do it. Technology is in short supply so there aren’t any bobcats or cranes, and who but Basil (a great-looking but, let’s face it, a not too bright guy) would do this and give him an honest days work regardless of the circumstances.

Basil dug you up, Brenda! (Brenda Starr debuted on 30 June 1940, making her 68 years old).

Quite young-looking for a 68-year old woman (and probobly older)
ang133 said, about 1 year ago
Basil’s not that young himself. Maybe that’s why he’s sweating. He’s got to be even older than Brenda, because unlike Demi Moore, she probably doesn’t go for young guys.

I agree with RayC. One has to wonder how long Price thought the artifact might be near the sphinx. If Basil was busy at his camp, why didn’t Price and Aurora make other arrangements for digging in that area?
