June Brigman and Mary Schmich’s classic soap-opera strip was a pioneer: a comic featuring a strong female lead character. Brenda Starr’s adventures, if not a realistic portrayal of a reporter’s life, have nevertheless captured the imagination of millions of readers.

This is the first time in over 30 years I have seen this strip. I always loved to read about Brenda and her adventures. She had a ffriend Mary Worth and her love interest was Basil. What has happened to Brenda since 30 years ago?

It doesn’t look to me like they are getting ready to “sleep”…
What has happened to Brenda since 30 years ago?! She got a new writer (Schmich) and a new artist (Brigman) who have both improved her tremendously! She is still pining after Basil, who reappears around once every coupla years for a tantalyzing adventure and then rides off into the sunset… In a week or two, we will see that panel…

I liked the way she and Basil looked before. She was more glamorous and he was more handsome and mysterious-looking. Just my opinon.

I don’t recall Brenda and Mary Worth as friends. Each had her own strip.
But if it was so, then I guess Mary was a mother figure, ‘cause she’s so much older than Brenda.

Brenda is definitely more of a realistic “working girl” now, with a Banana Republic/Ann Taylor wardrobe. Dale Messnick always drew her in clothes and furs she never would have been able to afford on a reporter’s salary–sort of like Della Street could never have dressed the way she did on TV on what Perry Mason would have paid a secretary. As for Basil, he’s as buff as ever, and still dashing, as any mystery man should be!

i rmember Mary Worth (nother comic strip) but i don’t remember them being friends.

Maybe Brenda will see something there that will start her asking questions about why Basil is there and what he was working on.
