June Brigman and Mary Schmich’s classic soap-opera strip was a pioneer: a comic featuring a strong female lead character. Brenda Starr’s adventures, if not a realistic portrayal of a reporter’s life, have nevertheless captured the imagination of millions of readers.

Some observations/questions
1) Once again, Meilla is way sharper than clueless Sage. And anyway, why has she thrown in her lot with him? She can go back to her village and live happily ever after any time she wants. (I mean, if they hadn’t walked into the jaws of death just now…)
2) Basil is obviously about to bring Brenda to the same shack where Sage was held. Maybe they will intercept Trad there. At a minimum, they will find the hole and shovel and start to piece the situation together…
3) When the hell is Brenda going to start shaking Basil down for some answers? What the hell is he doing in Kazookistan mixed up with these shady characters?
4) Just out of curiosity, what ethnicity is Trad supposed to be? Is he a local, or a Latino (he’s swarthy and his name is based on a Spanish word), or what?

Good questions all, Bill. Miella is one smart little girl.
Spending the night will delay them from finding the kids. I think that once again it will be Miella who gets the two of them out of the situation.

Oh, if only real life was this simple.

Whew ! Bill throws the hard balls. I think the girls have editor potential here if they wanna tap into it. I know D.T. could use that kind of help.

Actually, I am an editor in real life. Who is D.T.?

To answer some of Bill’s questions nd obserances:1-yes Meilla may seem smarter than Sage( look where she lives and at what it takes to survive )but she’s also caught up in her own little adventure( may-be she read too many of those Nancy Drew books ).
2-Concluded
3-I don’t know hao long you’ve been following the strip, but Mary S. has a bad habit for d…r…a…w…i…n…g out a story arc. Right now Brenda is so caught up in just seeing Basil is alive. Once she gets over her shock she may lay in with the interrogation. Or not. I’m not at liberty to say.
4-Trad looks( to me )to be from one of the Indian states; possibly Pakistan or Hindustan.

It was established from the arrival that Sage was too trusting / not suspicious of other people.
Why has Miella thrown in with Sage? Maybe she likes him. Maybe she wants to spend time with someone who speaks English, and is from Nancy Drew’s country. Maybe she likes to help people in trouble. Maybe it is late in the day, and she doesn’t want to travel back to her village at night. Maybe the authors need her to imitate Nancy Drew, find clues, figure out that Bentley is up to no good, and help get Sage away from him in time.
Since Trad is already at the shack, he is likely to find the hole and shovel before Brenda and Basil. If Bill W. is right about Basil’s plans, maybe Basil and Brenda will encounter Trad there.
(I see Brenda and Basil are still pushing their horses at at rate that is faster than reasonable for the distance.)
If my memory is correct, Trad is a local, although the name is based on Spanish.
Drawing out a story arc indeed. Sage was bitten by the snake over a month-and-a-week ago in our time; but in Brenda’s time, it seems to be sunset the day after.

D.T. is Dick Tracy. I don’t follow the discussion there anymore, since comments from puerile minds have come to dominate.

The DT refered to earlier is Dick Tracy, no doubt. That strip is in need of at least an editor. And possibly a writer like Lester Gooch

I’m with you on that,Jogger2. Got tired of DT while back.

Miella does have a compact, er, little sister. I don’t remember what she may have said about other relatives. Maybe someone who has premium service could go back and look. (And, while you are at it, find out what was Basil doing when he was told that two Americans were looking for him, and he didn’t want to be found.)
Subtorp seems to be pointing out that, if the story seems to be taking a long time to play out, we should bear in mind that the authors/artists have only a few square inches to work in pictures and dialog every day. The more events that are present in one day in Brenda’s time, the more days in real time are needed to present them.

“Men who are too nice are often not nice at all, Sage.”
Miella could be Brenda’s daughter, the way she spouts these wise sayings. At least, she’s a Mary Schmich woman.
I don’t see this as being drawn out. It seems to me that the story is moving on at a good pace. You’re right, Jogger2, if you want some detail, motivation, and character development, you will have to wait for it.
BTW, this strip along with Rex Morgan (Wash. Post comics) is one in which the Sunday strip carries the same story line as the weekly.
Jogger2 said, about 1 year ago
Generally, comics are offered to newspapers with Sunday sold separately from the 6 days editions. So, in strips like this, the Sunday and 6 day editions have to overlap. Also, the editors of Sunday comic pages have the option to reduce the size by not printing the top part.

I predict that Trad will offer to help Basil and Brenda, his original extortion plan having backfired. These villain types just can’t seem to stop themselves from gloating. There was no reason for Bentley to tip off Trad - other than to gloat.

Maybe Basil and Brenda can get some before Trad comes back. But that might not happen,Brenda is too busy thinking about Sage.redgrl7
