I was considering taking Amtrak from Northern California to visit my son in Austin, Texas. I looked at the schedules online and had two choices. I could take a train to Bakersfield (of all the godforsaken places), get on a bus and bounce through the desert to Los Angeles, then get on a train to Austin. Or I could take a train 800 miles out of my way to Galesburg, Illinois, get on a bus and bounce through the cornfields to Springfield, then take a train to Austin. Gee, I wonder why nobody rides the train?

I would expect this one to rear-end another one if the engineer is as messed up as the conductor.

I’ve done the weird train dance in the US, too. I grew up in a small rural town that was a rail hub for frieght, but there was no way a person could ride.

It always amazes me that American business doesn’t see those miles of already laid track as the answer to airplane ticket price gouging.

Now I live in continental Europe; the train services are efficient and relatively inexpensive, as well as saving energy.

I’m actually a big train advocate and I really wish America would get its act together in providing good train service. I’d LOVE to take a train from Ohio to Florida on a regular basis, but to do that, I have to go through Washington DC first and then do the whole bus thing a bit as well. A 3 day trip…..

I did take a train from Ohio to California once, and it was a fantastic trip! Highly advise taking the train – if you have the time and a somewhat direct route you can possibly take.

Just for you, StoicLion! Actually, I lived in Tampa Bay for six years. Heading there in two days, in fact. (No, not by train.)

I took the train from Azusa to LA, then back to Santa Clarita. Very efficient time and $$-wise.

So that’s the one that keeps leaving its tracks all over.

In years past, when train travel was the only way to go, passenger trains had precedence over freight trains. These days, freight has priority and you can find your passenger train side lined for HOURS waiting for a slow freight train to clear the tracks. Until that’s changed, I don’t see train travel making a huge comeback.

Your cartoon is in the free Tampa Bay Times, but it is usually a different cartoon than posted on gocomics.
We don’t have trains carrying people because our politicians have been bought by lobbyists with other interests.

Good ol’ TBT. Yea, the comics don’t always correspond with the ones here on GoComics, but that’s a great newspaper that I’m happy to be in!

I wish rail travel wasn’t such a political issue. It would make sense to have an efficient rail system here, but yea…..there’s a ways to go.
