The ol’ nag decided to use a different approach instead of nagging the cowboy about his weight.

While there are lots of explanations as to the original of the word “cowboy,” a lazy native speaker of Spanish pronouncing the Spanish word “caballero,” which means “horseman,” makes it sound almost like “cowboy” to a native speaker of English in Texas. “Caballo” is “horse” and is pronounced ‘cah-baw-yoh.” Lazily drop the “o” of the word and you have what sound like “cah-baw-ee.”

I majored in Spanish and I studied Texas-Mexico border slang in one of my classes.

By the way, while “vaquero” became “buckaroo” in Texas slang, the word really means one who takes care of cows, “vacas,” and usually herds them on foot.
