Meet Aaron McGruder’s The Boondocks: Huey and Riley Freeman, Jazmine DuBois, and Huey’s best friend, Caesar. This comic strip reflects the racial diversity and complexity of our world. Combining Huey’s childish antics with contemporary political and social satire, the strip explores the terrain where dashikis and Brand Nubian CDs meet The Gap and Hanson.

What’s he got against Robert Johnson? I’ve got his music on my iPod. Sounds good to me. Maybe that kid don’t like the Blues. Too bad.

Wrong Robert Johnson. Huey’s referring to the Robert Johnson that founded BET, his (and McGruder’s) favorite windmill at which to tilt.

It’s called “reappropriation” when a group uses an externally imposed derogatory label upon itself. Its purpose (in short) is to take the negative meaning out of the word and empower people within the group.
People outside the group who say, “why can’t I use that word?”, or claim, “ooh, why isn’t it a hate crime when they say it?” are generally closet (or outright) bigots, racists, or _____phobes.
