China is aiming to become only the third nation ever, after Russia and the U.S., to land a spacecraft on the moon.

The Asian nation successfully launched its Chang’e-3 probe, its third lunar mission, early on Monday morning, Beijing time. The spacecraft is set to make the first soft landing on the moon in nearly four decades, on or around December 14.

The Chang’e-3 is named after the Chinese goddess of the moon. It follows on the heels of two previous lunar orbiting missions launched by China since 2007, ones that surveyed and mapped the entire moon, including a potential future landing site for the current mission.

The four-legged lander—the size of a sports utility vehicle—is now on course to arrive in lunar orbit by the end of this week. After firing its rockets to slow its speed and go into orbit around the moon, it will next initiate a landing in mid-December, and finally release a 140-kilogram (300-pound), six-wheeled rover on the moon’s surface.

Sad that we’re no longer giving them competition. Thanks for the link.

Nice to see a mission again, but I don’t think it has anything to do with Gorrell’s toon, which is a slap at them declaring “air space”. (which we do as well with a lot of acres of ocean surface as well, like the “marine reserve” “W” declared (to his credit actually, from and environmental standpoint, though his “folks” used it more to declare territorial prerogatives.)

IF the Chines lander should knock over our flagpole (I’ve read the flag has deteriorated away fromUV?) will that lead to more territorial conflicts? (even though nobody actually has a claim on the moon, other than those folks that bought square inches of “claimed surface”??)

Do you think that if the Chinese are successful and land a crew on the moon they will then establish a “colony” and perhaps weaponize it?

Or maybe (LOL) they will get there and be told to never come back by the current alien residents as the US was ……….

Good post Rad. NASA is a worthy expenditure of government funds, I wish they would fund larger space exploration projects. The technological benefit to society from our moon program is a gift that still keeps on giving

^So much of today’s technology, from fabrics to electronics, comes from the NASA programs, yes indeed, the “moon mission” and exploration of space, has been the most “cost effective” program ever created by government. That in the U. S. the support systems have been “privatized” also reflects what has happened in this country over the past 30 years or so. Those critical of “government”, and touting “private industry”, really need to take a closer look at how our system actually works.
