“Every animal has an equal right to live” Ok, but it’s hard to follow this principle when a fly buzzes around you while you’re reading a book on a warm summer evening.

It’s impossible to follow that philosophy… because how small of an animal can you have that still has an equal right to live? By that logic, my intestinal bacteria have as equal a right to live as anything else, and I’m constantly crapping them to death. What gives?

Your right to live ends when you spit in my Ovaltine, little cucaracha!

Mosquitos – has anyone ever been able to justify their existence, other than as food for bats and some birds?

I make exceptions to biting insects and those insects which won’t move off the highway soon enough.

Mosquito larvae are a pretty big part of pond ecosystems. Once they emerge from the water, they live mostly on fruit, by sucking the juice. In most species, only the females ever bite anything but fruit, and then only once in a lifetime when they need extra nutrition to make a clutch of eggs.

But it’s rather difficult to think of all the males who never bite, and the many females that became bird or bat food before they were ready to reproduce, when a swarm envelopes you and bites you in a half-dozen places at once!

They’re good for driving creationists even more nuts than they already are. You’ll notice that they go on and on about lions, flamingos, pandas, but never about mosquitos, guinea worms, ichneumon wasps, or the fact that something like half of all species are parasites, a fact easily explainable by evolution, but one which creationists are just hoping no one will point out.

Mosquitos are very helpful to the various bacteria and virusii that get passed on by them.

What about bacteria and viruses that your immune system is constantly killing?

Ours is not to question Creation, but to attempt to understand it. Why, a mosquito? I don’t know, I’ll ask Him when I see Him.
