Bloom County, a 1980s cartoon-comic strip that dealt with socio-political issues as seen through the eyes of highly exaggerated characters (e.g. Bill the Cat and Opus the Penguin) and humorous analogies.
Creator Berkeley Breathed's first regularly published strip, Academia Waltz, appeared in the Daily Texan in 1978. The strip attracted notice from the editors of the Washington Post who recruited him to do a nationally syndicated strip. On December 8, 1980, Bloom County made its debut and featured some of the characters from Academia Waltz, including former frat-boy Steve Dallas and the paraplegic Vietnam War veteran Cutter John.
Bloom County earned Berkeley the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987. The strip eventually appeared in over 1,200 newspapers around the world until he retired the daily strip in 1989, stating, "A good comic strip is no more eternal than a ripe melon. The ugly truth is that in most cases, comics age less gracefully than their creators". The comic continues in recirculation on GoComics!

SDI didn’t have to work to work. (That just does not look right.)

If only we had spent another trillion dollars to defeat an enemy, that was already collapsing. Of course back then, debt as a percentage of GDP was a good thing.

caution statement: the news should be taken in small doses and with a grain of salt, preferably with sizeable dollop of comic relief.

Yeah, they were dumping all their assets into a black hole called Afghanistan.

I remember that! And Reagan gave a lot of money and arms to “Those Heroic Freedom Fighters” (his words) fighting the Russians there. Like that Bin Ladin guy, I wonder what ever happened to him?

He forgot, “Reagan (err, his handlers) didn’t make a secret illegal deal with Iran (over the hostages) to sabotage Carter’s re-election chances”.

The Great Right Lies of Ronny Raygunz were always hard to swallow. Oh yeah where’s that missile defense system Ronny and the republicans wasted so many taxpayer dollars on? As usual another republican failure that cost us all too much.
el_flesh said, 2 months ago
It’s been said that Ronnie knew it wouldn’t work, but that spending the amount they did wrecked the Reds who had to keep up…like another space race.

Are you guys forgetting about what the economy was when Reagan was elected? 30% home mortgage rates, double-digit inflation – the country was a mess. Thanks to your revered peanut farmer. And Reagan turned all that around – despite the Democrats opposition.
Too bad today the Republicans are not as successful as stopping the Democrats – agreeing to Lew/Nabors/Obama’s sequestor, just so Obama wouldn’t have to address deficit during re-election was dumb.
And now we’re paying for it – and the Repubs are getting the blame. Classic liberal ‘thinking’.
