Y’know, I never did get, or like, the Bill the Cat character. Somebody want to take a shot at ‘splainin’ to the curmudgeon why this guy is funny or witty or insightful or symbolic or something?

cleokaya - More like Boots after a major catnip binge
4deerinmyyard - Bill is the antithesis of the average comic strip cat.
He is in no way ‘cute’ or ‘endearing’
That is precisely why we like him

rayannina-That’s exactly what I was going to say!

It is scary how bill reminds me of my brother.

Bill the cat is the most gross, despicible cartoon creature on earth; still, totally gnarly. Bill just rules.

We love Bill the Cat!! He’s like Garfield on Cocaine.
SherlockWatson said, 5 months ago
I think the idea was that, after years of Garfield and Heathcliff, we got to see a cat that was a lot closer to real-life cats. At least, the cats we all stayed away from.

Ack! I have a Stuffed Bill on top of my bookshelf and a “Don’t Blame Me: I Voted for Bill and Opus” t-shirt in my drawer. Bill Rocks. (And Garfield is much better Minus.)
Logicman said, 5 months ago
Bill is uncouth, unkempt, clearly did too many drugs in college, often causes problems because of his personality and is totally unconcerned about what others think of him … a purr-fect foil for Opus in other words.
Oh, and he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body, and is truly a ‘good friend’ in his own way, which is why despite all the above, ya gotta love him. Aaaaak! (And this from a guy who doesn’t really like cats!)

Okay, thanks, everybody, for your efforts. I still say “Meh”. Oh, well, it would be a boring world if everybody had the same opinions on all topics.
And I love cats.

About time Bil the Cat showed up ( I remember it being spelled with one “l”, but I could be wrong). The only other truly endearing cat in comicdom was Fat Freddy’s. Of course, Fritz was pretty cool, too.

WELCOME B….ACK!

Sherm, Garfield was launched in 1978, two years before Bloom County. IMO, Bill was a response to Garfield’s downward slide into Cuteness, from his original height of Snark.
