Isn’t this just a mini-version of the story of Steve’s life? A rival triumphant, a penguin ingenuously emasculating him verbally? Well, he’s earned it.

Birds are entertaining to watch, but up close they are gross. Especially the wild geese in the park. They cover the side walk with their droppings.
I am new, don’t know Steve, but for some reason I like him here. Issues?

    Yes, indeed, he is, but….

    In Defense of Steve Dallas

    …A thing I never imagined I would write….

Sure, the fellow is crass, crude, and clueless. But look at his expression here:
    http://www.gocomics.com/opus
Just prior to that, we had seen him wild-eyed with anxiety for his little blob-butted buddy. These were two of only a handful of occasions we have ever seen him without his sunglasses.

The sunglasses are the clue. They are his shield against reality, and against vulnerability to any real connection with others. They are his shield against seeing himself, and against allowing himself to be seen.

The jerk we met in Academia Waltz was already doomed. He had bought the whole program, and donned the jerk persona because that was what he thought he was supposed to do and be. But his true – stunted, undeveloped, unacknowledged – nature is discernible in the link above.
