American Airline flight 191 May 25, 1979, Chicago. 273 died when an engine fell off a DC10 after taking off.

Left? That’s landlubber’s talk. It’s Port, matey, both on the boundin’ blue and the wild blue yonder.

Yeah, but when they talk to passengers,n they use lay men’s language because many won’t understand port or starboard.

To me Port side has always been toward the Sherry cabinet.

My Chicago newspaper didn’t run this Bliss strip today and ran a 2011 Bliss strip instead.

Not funny – but a two-engine jet must be able to fly and land with one engine. Each engine is held on by four (only) bolts so that critical vibrations cause it to fall off rather than destroying the airframe.

Somethings just aren’t funny no matter when they run. Why I stay away from most humor.

That actually happened to my dad. Was flying out of Idlewild (now JFK; that’s how long ago this was) when an engine left the aircraft and headed for the Atlantic. The plane turned back to NY; everyone hopped off onto another plane and off they went again.
