Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan was born in County Meath, Ireland, on May 16, 1953. He was raised in Ireland and Scotland before settling in London as a teen. After initially studying commercial illustration at art school, he switched to drama and quickly established his reputation on the London stage.

He made his movie debut in the acclaimed 1980 British gangster film "The Long Good Friday" and racked up a string of TV credits in England before relocating to Hollywood with his wife, actress Cassandra Harris. The move paid immediate dividends when he was cast as the lead in a TV series.

"Remington Steele" made Pierce a star. When the series was canceled in 1986, he was set to replace Roger Moore as James Bond in "The Living Daylights" - until the resulting publicity persuaded the network to renew the show! Brosnan was obliged to turn down the role of 007, allowing Timothy Dalton to step in. Tragedy struck when Cassandra was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After a four-year battle with the disease, the mother of three died in 1991, aged only 43.

Following "Remington Steele," Brosnan's movie credits ranged from the spy drama "The Fourth Protocol" to the comedy "Mrs. Doubtfire."

Cassandra, who had appeared in "For Your Eyes Only," had always wanted Pierce to play Bond - and in 1995, her wish was fulfilled when he took the lead in "Goldeneye." He went on to play the legendary secrete agent in three more Bond movies.

He found happiness in his personal life with journalist Keely Shaye Smith. They married in 2001 and have two children together. But that happiness was shattered in 2013 with the death of his adopted daughter, Charlotte, 41, who fell victim to the same ovarian cancer that claimed the life of her mother.

His work has spanned the spectrum, from "Mars Attacks!" to "Mamma Mia!" and such dramatic fare as "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "The Matador." His latest outing sees him back in the thick of action in the spy thriller "The November Man."
