George Clooney

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, on May 6, 1961, the son of a TV anchor and a beuty queen, George Timothy Clooney arrived in Hollywood in 1982 with $300 in his pocket. He stayed with his aunt, singer Rosemary Clooney, for a while, then found himself living in a friend's walk-in closet while he pursued his acting ambitions. Success did not come quickly, and he took a variety of jobs to survive, from working in construction to selling insurance door to door. He even drew caricatures in a mall.

For 10 years, he racked up TV credits, appearing in everything from "The Facts of Life" to "Roseanne," as his star slowly began to rise.

By the early 1990s, thanks to leading roles on the TV shows "Sunset Beat," "Baby Talk," "Bodies of Evidence" and "Sisters," he was very successful, but still largely unknown. That all changed in 1994 when he was cast as Dr. Doug Ross on the hit drama "ER." His five-year run on the show made him a major heartthrob around the world and paved the way for movie stardom.

While still on "ER," he starred in "From Dusk Till Dawn," "Batman &Robin," "the Peacemaker," "Out of Sight" and "Three Kings," before going on to make "O Brother, Where art Thou?" and "The Perfect Storm."

"Oceans 11" was a box-office smash that spawned tow successful sequels, and 2005's "Syriana" earned him an Academy Award.

A committed political activist who has championed a number of worthy causes, he was appointed a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2008.

He made his directorial debut with 2002's "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," and his producer credits range from cable TV hits to blockbuster movies.

Clooney wrote, directed and starred in 2005's "Good Night, and Good Luck," earning Oscar nominations for best director and best screenplay in the process. The first person ever to be nominated for Academy Awards in six different categories, he received an Oscar, alongside Ben Affleck and Grant Heslov, for producing the 2012 hit movie "Argo."
