Not a Sherlock Holmes pipe, it is suppose to be a Gandor the Gray type of pipe.

Picture Guy’s pipe looks like a “church warden”. In the books Sherlock Holmes smoked an old oily clay pipe, not a Calabash as is depicted in the movies.

It’s not Gandor the Gray, for heavens’ sakes! It’s GANDALF the GREY. Please go read the Tolkien books before the Hobbit comes out next week.

Can someone tell me how I change my avatar?

My paperback edition of “The Hobbit” is a hair under 300 pages. Compared to the fantasy doorstops produced by modern writers like George R. R. Martin, Steven Erikson, and Robert Jordan, it’s nothing. I’m not even sure how Peter Jackson is going to squeeze three movies out of it…

Mr. Pierce, how come nate’s school is the only one just called PS38? How come the other schools in his town have names, such as Jefferson?

Well, that’s sort of a long story, but here goes: When I started the strip, I was living in New York City. In New York, many of the public schools have numbers, which I thought was kind of cool. So I gave Nate’s school a number for a name, not really realizing that NYC is really the only place in the US with school names like that. So by naming Nate’s school P.S. 38, I probably created some confusion. Some people might think that means Nate lives in NYC, which of course he doesn’t. If I were doing it all over again, I’d give his school a “real” name. Incidentally, I chose the number 38 because it was my street address growing up: 38 Coe Drive in Durham, New Hampshire.

Very cool! My husband went to PS 182 in the Bronx, so I picked up on that “NY” location pretty quick. You know, the school can always have a “ceremony” to change the school name to someone who has contributed a TON of money towards the school… ;)

It didn’t work SPG. He said that there was no smoking. How did SPG get to the conclusion the worker thought he was a wizard?
